So many movies come out every year, it is inevitable we will miss one or two gems amidst the abyss of typical Hollywood garbage. So in the spirit of the impending awards season, here is a shorter, more manageable guide to some standout films of the past year, complete with my personally-assigned superlatives. If you have not seen one, go rent it on iTunes on the next rainy afternoon and see if you agree with it’s prestigious award.

Cutest Romantic Movieβ€”The Vow (But bring your portable tissue package)

Most Talked Aboutβ€”The Dark Knight Rises (This film got publicity for all of the right and wrong reasons)

Best Date Movieβ€”There is no such thing as a good date movie–do something more creative on a date!

Best Remakeβ€”The Amazing Spiderman (Obviously it’s better if the word “amazing” is slipped in there)

Least Boring Action Movieβ€”The Avengers (Yeah, there are explosions and fighting; but there is also eye candy and witty remarks)

Most Hilariousβ€”21 Jump Street (The funniest part was when Channing Tatum didn’t get the girl in the end)

Most Misunderstoodβ€”Moonrise Kingdom (This will put all of your awkward childhood stories to shame)

Quirkiestβ€”Perks of Being A Wallflower (On the outside it’s awkwardly humorous, but look out for that deeper message!)

Best Family Movieβ€”Wreck it Ralph (Just an all-around great time)

Most Educationalβ€”Lincoln (That Honest Abe was quite the character, and this is an entertaining way to learn about those famous consitutional amendments)

Best Movie to See Aloneβ€”Magic Mike (Abs on abs on abs for days)

Strongest Tearjerkerβ€”Les Miserables (I mean, the title says it all, but it’s not a complete downer in the end)

THEN

My Favoriteβ€”Silver Linings Playbook (I can’t define this one, just go see it…please)
