Every IC student knows that in Ithaca, New York the weather is a bit…crazy, but so far this semester we’re experiencing almost every season but summer. To say this weather is like the classic Katy Perry song, “Hot and Cold” is a bit of an understatement. For instance, we went from a snowy and icy Monday to a pouring rain Tuesday to a warm Wednesday, and then back to a freezing cold weekend. We can’t help to wonder what is going on this winter?
My first spring semester, which was last year, I was extremely spoiled when it came to the weather at IC. When I decided on Ithaca College, I was prepared for the cold and snowy weather that it’s known for. I was then taken by surprise when the winter was not quite as white as I thought it would be. In fact, starting in March, the temperature on South Hill was around 80 degrees! The freshman class was so lucky and upperclassmen complained saying, “it’s never like this, so don’t get used to it.” After last year, I felt optimistic about the weather and did not care what the upperclassmen said. Ithaca was gorges and I was living in an up-state New Yorker’s winter dream!
Unfortunately this year, my bubble has busted due to all the rain, hail, sleet, and snow. For instance, I was here the last possible day of the fall semester and Ithaca got hit with a huge snowstorm. It was on that day when I realized that I was finally in Ithaca, New York. Over break, every once in a while, I would check the Ithaca weather to see how freezing it was up there and I was so glad to be home on Long Island. I was not ready to experience weather in the single digits but I was in for a real Ithaca winter experience.
I arrived back to campus with a scarf on my neck, mittens on my hands, and snow on the ground. The first few days of the new semester were tortuous to say the least; if I exposed my fingers for a few seconds they would turn blue. Everyone on campus was bundled up and did not want to go outside for even 10 minutes. The freshmen and sophomores were in for a rude awakening and the Ithaca weather was upon us. Each day was getting worse; the slush was turning into ice and rain was pouring all over our backpacks. I have never experienced such outrageous weather conditions in my life!
Hopefully this crazy weather will slow down within the next few months because I am clearly sick and tired of it. I would love a nice, warm, and sunny day soon but at this point that dream is very far from becoming a reality. Here’s to investing in more raincoats, hats, scarves, and earmuffs this winter; it seems like it’s going to be a long one!
