Pop Wise: The Single Girl’s V-Day Playlist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

Valentine’s Day is around the corner once more. While couples prepare with chocolates, flowers
and great shows of love, us single girls are left to wonder why we’re constantly forgotten during
the holiday of romance. Being single, though, is more than the jaded girl proclaiming death to
any and everything that is V-Day. There are different shades to singledom, equally liberating
and frustrating for those experiencing it. To get collegiettes through this year’s love fest, we’ve
devised the perfect songs to match every kind of single girl’s woes. Play these tracks on repeat
until you find your V-Day silver lining.

If you’ve been jilted by love: “Jar of Hearts”

No song manages to capture the power and heartbreak of moving on like Christina Perri’s soulful
ballad, which FYI was written about her own ex. It’s the perfect reminder that even though
you’re hurting, you can still take back control of your life.

If you’re hoping for romance: “She Will Be Loved”

One of Maroon 5’s greatest hits, this song speaks to every single girl’s secret desire to be pined
after. What could be more romantic than imagining Adam Levine waiting in the rain at your
doorstep just to say how beautiful you are?

If you’re reeling from a breakup: “Set Fire to the Rain”

As sung in the past, breaking up is hard to do. But with the musical genius of Adele on your
side, there’s no doubt you’ll come through it stronger. This Adele hit reflects not only the pain of
saying goodbye, but also the clarity of realizing it’s the right thing to do.

If you’re over relationships: “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”

When this song first came out, many made fun of Taylor’s childish lyrics, equating them to
the nonsense of a teenage gab fest. In reality, nothing could capture the ridiculousness of some
relationships better. If you’re tired of the same old games, take a breather with this tune.

If you’re single but regretting it: “Need You Now”

After a breakup, it’s easy to second-guess yourself, especially if you were the one doing the
dumping. As thoughts of your ex run through your mind, Lady Antebellum’s popular anthem is
sure to match your guilty conscience–maybe even encourage you to rekindle the romance.

If you’ve been played: “Undo It”

Realizing the guy you’re interested in is a total player can leave you feeling stupid and ashamed.
Sometimes, they just get the better of us ladies, as Ms. Underwood so melodically points out. But
as she also sings, it’s never too late to erase him from your memory!

If you’re looking for fun: “Domino”

The upside to being single: there’s no one holding you back from having a good time. Only
freewheeling songstress Jessie J could exude that feeling through this upbeat tune. When the
clock strokes midnight, why not go out and do some dirty dancing of your own?

If you’re crushing hard: “Fallin’ For You”

Acoustic sweetheart Colbie Caillat just seems to understand that should I or shouldn’t I dilemma
of telling your crush how you really feel. Listening to her airy melody will surely bring on the
butterflies in your stomach–maybe enough to inspire you to take a leap.

If your love is unrequited: “Poison & Wine”

Getting over a guy who’s taken or an ex who’s moved on can be rough. Luckily, folk group The
Civil Wars has a song for your pain. This haunting track completely mimics that torn feeling of
wanting to let go while being too drawn to stop from falling–cue the massive bawl session.

If you’re single and loving it: “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”

Arguably, the best shade of single is embracing it fully. No song could possibly top Beyonce’s
dance single as the anthem of independent women everywhere. Not only does it say you’re out
for a good time, but also that you don’t care what any guy thinks about it–now that’s strength.
