A Girl’s Guide to Set-Up Parties

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

Being set-up with someone you don’t know can sometimes be pretty scary. There are so many possibilities for how the night will turn out: What if your date turns out to be a weirdo? What if he doesn’t like you? What if he ends up with someone else? If you want to be prepared for all of the possibilities, follow these tips!

1. Meet your date before the event

This way, it will be a lot less awkward when it comes time for the actual event. If the ice is already broken, both of you will feel slightly less uncomfortable the next time you meet. Coffee dates are usually your best bet; the very short time commitment offers you the perfect escape if it’s not going well, and there is less pressure to keep a long conversation going.

2. Maintain the perfect amount of communication

Leading up to the party, make sure to keep in contact with him about plans for the pre-game, costumes, etc. But don’t overwhelm him! If you bombard him with messages every minute, he will immediately be turned off. Take your time in responding to him and make sure to keep him updated.

3. Find out if any of his friends are going

If his friends are also going, then maybe try to coordinate plans to go to the party together as a group. If you make the effort to make him comfortable, he will most definitely appreciate it.

3. If it’s not going well….

Suck it up for the night, and then you never have to see him again. Not every set-up is meant to be, so accept defeat and move on.
