Why You Should Watch The 2013 Oscars

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

The Academy Awards may seem to be just a bunch of “millionaires giving each other golden statues,” as Billy Crystal joked last year, but there’s a reason for the massive media attention it garners year after year. It honors one our most valued forms of entertainment: the movies, that magical medium that can inspire you, make you laugh, think, or cry in two hours. The Oscars provide a chance to celebrate the stories that affected us all year, with the celebrities that we don’t know, but still love.

If that is not reason enough, here are four more reasons to tune in on Sunday the 24th.

1. Seth MacFarlane:
The funny man that has hid behind his genius (and raunchy) cartoon creations on Family Guy, is making his grand debut in the Hollywood sphere as himself. After a classic host choice last year, he tried and true Billy Crystal, the Academy decided to recruit some fresh blood. Macfarlane, who’s known for pushing boundaries and buttons, will add an extra spice to the Oscars.

2. Skits:
The Oscars are long, but producers ensure the show stays lively by recruiting comedic masterminds such as Tina Fey, Amy Pohler, Will Ferrell, Emma Stone, and Ben Stiller as presenters. Last year, Emma Stone and Ben Stiller riffed on stage as a wide-eyed ingénue and seasoned actor who’s seen it all to great effect: Check it out here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xp2q4e_the-84th-annual-academy-awards-emma-stone-ben-stiller-present-february-26-2012_people#.USKuRTl_kwE

There’s a good chance that 22- year old Jennifer Lawrence will take home the golden statue for her affecting portrayal of Tiffany in Silver Linings Playbook. Lawrence is not only charming on screen but when she takes the stage, her impromptu speeches are a breath of fresh air. From talk show stunts to red carpet interviews, Lawrence continues to prove she’s more than America’s Sweetheart; she’s the girl everyone wants as a best friend. Even if she doesn’t win the award, look for her interviews on the red carpet.

3. Red Carpet
The Oscars Red Carpet is the Queen of all other red carpets—it’s a chance for all celebrities and designers to showcase their style on the most-watched runway. The SAG awards, Golden Globes and Critics Choice all lead up to the Oscars, and judging by the great fashion choices from these previous ceremonies, the 2013 red carpet will be one to remember. Risky choices such as Bjork’s goose dress, will be remembered for their oddities.

Others like Halle Berry’s Ellie Saab maroon number will go down in red carpet history for their glamour.

4. The Buzz
Remember when Adrian Brody kissed Halle Berry? Or when Jim Rash mocked Angelina Jolie’s leg-bearing stance? And who can forget Sacha Baron Cohen, in the garb of The Dicator, spilling fake Kim Jong-Il ashes on Ryan Seacrest? This year is bound to bring more memorable moments that will storm the media. Prior to the event, the buzz circulates around who was nominated, who was snubbed (Ben Affleck!) and who will or should win. Prior to the Oscars all major media outlets, social networks, and blogs rehash Hollywood’s big night, from the fashion, to the speeches, to the funny sketches and you don’t want to miss out.

The Oscars air Live February 24 at 7 p.m. on ABC.
