Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

I guarantee that you’ve heard someone say that at least once in your lifetime and even if you haven’t, I’m saying it to you right now. If you live on Towson’s campus, prepare for the biggest recycling event all year, RecycleMania!

RecycleMania is a national competition in which tons of schools all over the nation participate. This past year, Towson was not a very competitive contender, finishing 169th out of 275 participating schools. We absolutely have to do better this year!

American University in Washington, D.C. won RecycleMania in 2012, becoming the defending national champion this year. American University is much smaller than Towson, therefore we should have absolutely no problem competing with them this year as long as everyone gets involved.

This ongoing competition started February 3 and ends the 5 of April. That’s almost nine weeks to really crack down and show your care and concern for the Earth’s well being.

Along with RecycleMania being a national competition, this year Towson has decided to also make it a dorm wide competition in hopes that more people will participate. Throughout the national competition Towson will tally up all the recyclables that each dorm collects and recycles. At the end of the national competition, the dorm with the highest recycling rate will win a cash prize of a number of dollars that is equivalent to the number of students living in that building.

Towson’s campus wide competition struck up some building wide competitions as well. Prettyman and Scarborough halls are participating in their own competition in order to promote RecycleMania over the next four weeks. The floor with the most recycling out of these two dorms at the end of the four-week time frame will win a Chipotle party.

Make sure to look out for individual competitions such as this one and be sure to participate in the excitement as well. Every bottle or piece of paper helps the cause, saves natural resources, and reduces unnecessary space in landfills. Jump in and get involved!
