Style Blog: Girls Will Be Boys

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

From jeans to jackets, shirts to shoes, it seems the most recent trend to capture our hearts involves robbing your boyfriend’s wardrobe. Thanks to Cara Delevingne and the Olsen twins, the tomboy look has been enjoying an unparalleled appeal of late. Although notably seen on the Paris and New York catwalks of 2010, this trend has found its way into our everyday casual wear, and rightly so.

Designers such as Kooples, Alexander Wang, and Band of Outsiders are great ambassadors of this look, but obviously come with a hefty price tag. Here are a few ways you can get those high fashion looks, for affordable prices.

Mary-Kate Olsen is a perfect example of how to work the ‘tomboy’ trend. From casual wear to red carpets this twin manages to effortlessly throw together a perfect outfit time and time again. The simplicity of her looks mean they are easy to replicate on a budget, lucky for us. One go to rule when achieving the ‘tomboy’ look is making it baggy; obviously you don’t want to be drowning in fabric, but enough extra so it hangs off you nicely. Her outfit here demonstrates a look that can go straight from daywear into night.

This boyish look modelled by the beautiful Rosie Huntington Whiteley is the reason why we should all be getting excited for summer. The boyfriend jeans are a must have, as they provide unprecedented comfort while looking painlessly fashionable. The 90s look, that has been granted its second lease of life in 2012/13 doesn’t stop at baggy denim; strappy shoes are also a statement you want to be making this summer, whether it be in heels or flats. What again works so well with this outfit is the simplicity and effortless chic it grants.

As demonstrated by both Miss Olson and Rosie Whiteley above, the tomboy’s wardrobe only needs a few staple items that can be thrown together to make several different outfits. It seems a concurrent theme in recent trends that in order to be fashion forward one must look back. This is a fundamental rule when getting the tomboy look down to a ‘T’, take the likes of 90s Drew Barrymore and Gwen Stefani when finding inspiration. Or sit down for a cuppa and browse through ‘Tomboy Style: Beyond the Boundaries of Fashion,’ a coffee table book published by Rizzoli that offers the heritage of this ever evolving trend.
