Top 3 Movies to See When You’ve Got The Post-Oscar Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Right in the aftermath of Oscar Season, before the big summer movies are set to come out, the movie landscape appears barren and nary a butt can be found in a theater seat. Some very interesting movies tend to slip under the radar in this time, and if this long, dreary winter and school year is getting to you, here are three great movies you could see to forget about that term paper or midterm for a while.

Side Effects:

This movie has all of your favorites – Rooney Mara with the dragon tattoo; stripper/ thespian Channing Tatum (or as I lovingly like to call him: Charming Potato); boyfriend of your (my) teen years and Robert Downy Jr.’s current husband, Jude Law; and the infamous Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones). What? That’s how I remember who actors are. Anyway this is the last feature film that Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh is saying he’ll make, so if you enjoy yellow filters and snappy storytelling you should check this movie out. According to Wikipedia, Side Effects is a ‘psychological thriller-neo-noir film’ and I need to know what that means, so I’ll be seeing this movie. It’s currently playing at the Cineplex Forum on Atwater and St. Catherine.

Stoker:

Like Side Effects this movie has been getting great reviews. I like a good creepy film with a lot of disturbing thrown in on the side. If you’re also into that, then you should definitely see this. Foreign or Asian cinema buffs should know that this is the first English language film by Chan-wook Park, director of the South Korean thriller Oldboy. Stoker stars Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, and Mia Wasikowska. It comes out in Montreal on March 15th and will also be playing at the Cineplex Forum.

Spring Breakers:

Okay, I’m recommending this film because the trailer looks awesome and this latest installment in James Franco’s prolific, eclectic and distinguished IMDB page (I’m only half-kidding) seems like a whole lot of campy fun. If you’re a Harmony Korine fan and have seen Kids then you’ve probably already been waiting for this film forever. I’m not familiar with Vanessa Hudgens or Selena Gomez, but I know a lot of people who are, so this film is sure to have something for everyone. McGill students should be particularly interested in this movie because we seek to understand the mysterious practices of our American university counterparts who actually get to experience a thing called Spring Break. Spring Breakers comes out March 29th.
