Love Letter to Burns Library

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Dear Burns Library,

I have to admit, I was pretty skeptical the first time I met you.  I just got back to BC after a semester abroad, so finding out that I had to go to you for one of my first classes was quite intimidating.  I didn’t know what to expect, or what you would be like.  But since that first awkward meeting, our relationship has progressed quickly, and I can honestly say that I love you.

At first, I was unsure; it felt a little like you didn’t want me there.  I had to sign in, I had to leave all my stuff in a closet, and I could only use a pencil to write with (spoiler alert: I haven’t used a pencil since high school).  I followed all of your rules, but I was still worried that I was somehow doing something wrong.  What if you get mad at me for having my Burt’s Bees?  Or because I have a cold and keep coughing?  Was I allowed to have my computer?  The first day of class is stressful enough, so really, this additional stress was unnecessary and not appreciated.

Then I found out that I would have to spend at least three hours a week outside of class with you.  So I came back to you three days later, still feeling a little unsure, but I was ready to dive into our relationship.  We spent some time together that afternoon, and that’s when I started to realize how great you were.  While everyone else was hanging out with your friends Bapst and O’Neill, I got to spend time with you.  It was quiet and relaxing, and no one was around.  You let me focus on reading my comic books (yes, I’m in a history class where we read comic books), and I was able to get so much work done.  While I was working, you were thoughtful enough to warm up my coat by having me hang it next to the heater, so that when I had to leave you, I had a toasty coat to help me battle the cold.

It hasn’t been long, Burns, but it’s true, I do love you.  I love the time that we spend together each week, and I love that you’re still a secret to so many people at BC.  You’re always there for me (at least, you are Monday through Friday, 9 to 5, and sometimes on Saturday), and I love knowing that I can go to you whenever I need a quiet place to do work.

Love,

Remy
