Her Campus Leeds’ Guide to Easter Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

Returning home for Easter can be an exciting time to see family and catch up with relatives, until the novelty of your return wears off and the nagging starts again, as though you never left. We advise you to take a break from the dreaded revision over the Easter period, catch up with some old school friends, and check out these promising new film releases. We hope that you enjoy them!

Evil Dead – Friday 5th April

This film is undoubtedly one to avoid if you are not a fan of horrors. The remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 classic horror is the first in the franchise not to be produced by him; however, he handpicked the new director and is a producer for the film. Given this information, we can expect buckets of blood, gore and blood curdling screams. The film follows five college students who go on holiday in a remote cabin in the woods. They discover a book of the dead and unknowingly summon haunted demons, which possess the teenagers in a fight for survival. The first film has achieved cult following and some fans are unhappy about the remaking of their beloved classic. In spite of this, many horror critics eagerly await the release of the film.

Iron Man 3 – Friday 3rd May

If you enjoy watching American action films, Iron man 3 is definitely one to watch. Iron man 3 will be the first marvel film to screen after the release of Avengers Assemble; if you saw Avengers, you will know that it is a hard act to follow. The film is centred on the ‘Iron Man’ creator and billionaire, Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jnr. Stark faces his toughest competition yet in the form of villain, the Mandarin. The biggest difference between Iron Man 3 and the previous Iron Man films is the change in director, from Jon Favrau to Shane Black.

The Great Gatsby – Friday 17th May

This is certainly a film that is set to be the standout of the year. It has an all-star cast which includes Leonardo DiCaprio, who takes the main role as the obsessive and mysterious Gatsby, and Carey Mulligan, as the dysfunctional picturesque Daisy Buchanan. The film is directed by Baz Luhrmann who has injected the same amount of glamour and decadence into this film as he did into Moulin Rouge or Romeo & Juliet. For those of you who have not read Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the intense love affair set in the prosperous Roaring Twenties of Long Island is a fascinating story of tragic betrayal. Also starring are Spiderman’s Tobey Maguire, who plays the naïve narrator, Nick, and Joel Edgerton, as the controlling Tom Buchanan.

Star Trek Into Darkness – Friday 17th May

For those of you who have a secret love for sci-fi, Star Trek is back! Star Trek may well fall under the sci-fi genre, but this sequel is packed full of action and drama. The plot sees Captain Kirk lead the Enterprise crew into a war-zone in order to fight the force that threatens the existence of earth as we know it. Captain Kirk is played by Chris Pine, who briefly studied at the University of Leeds. The majority of the cast have returned for the sequel after J J Abrams’ first Star Trek film, but this time we are delighted to see the addition of Sherlock star, Benedict Cumberbatch. Critics have predicted this film to be even better than the first, so do not miss it!

The Hangover Part III – Friday 24th May

The Hangover Part III is the trilogy to the breakout film series of the past few years. We have loved watching Bradley Cooper walk about in ripped clothing, seeing something terrible happen to Stuart Helm’s ‘psyche’, and witness Zach Galafinakis as an outrageous character. However, there are doubts surrounding this film following the less than stellar reviews for the second of the series, set in Bangkok. Whilst we both loved it, we know nothing can beat the original. However, we always enjoy director Todd Phillips’ attempts. The final part follows the character of Alan as he struggles to get over his father’s death. Favourites such as Leslie Chow and Mike Tyson are set to reprise their roles.
