Who Would You Date? Game of Thrones Version

People who know me say I’m obsessed with Game of Thrones. My good friends will defend me, saying I’m just passionate.

But I am obsessed. I will delightfully admit my obsession to anyone and then we can nerd out together about how amazing Game of Thrones is and become bestest friends five-ever.

One topic that often comes up when discussing this phenomenal series is which character we would date. Even though we know which male character we’d get with and which female characters we want to be or be on, this article will be about the hunky and not so hunky men. The ladies will have to wait.

Talking about a series where only two seasons have aired with five books out is like walking into a mine field. Some people only watch the show and refuse to read the books and then get upset when they hear a spoiler from book three and on. The world agrees that these people need to either read the books or leave the room when the topic of conversation is Game of Thrones. If you’re in the process of reading the books or just don’t have time, that’s a different story.

But nonetheless, spoilers are a touchy subject so I will not reveal anything that happens after season two. George R. R. Martin did a fantastic job of making readers fall in love with the characters we envisioned in our heads. The casting directors, Nina Gold and Robert Sterne, did just as well picking the cast and emulating physical attributes that our society favors.

Ned Stark

Ned Stark’s death was the catalyst of all catalysts in the fantasy world. Everyone loved him. The strength of Ned Stark cannot be questioned. Ned talks to everyone on a relatable, human level and values everyone for their strengths. The Lord of Winterfell knows what it means to take a life as well as save one. The man would do anything for his family and his king, and stands by his words. Other characters often refer to him as being honorable even though he died because of it. Any woman would be lucky to call herself “Lady Stark.”

Rob Stark

We all want the Young Wolf to defeat the Lannisters and become King. He’s the hero of the story who was supposed to become Lord of Winterfell before Ned was killed. He matures with the swish of the sword that killed his father and commands his troops to move against the Lannisters. Even though Rob is 17 in the T.V. series and 14 in the books, his no-nonsense and commanding demeanor gains him the respect of men much older. Rob is not a failure in the looks department, nor is he a let-down with his intelligence; except for marrying Jeyne and lying to the Freys, that is. Rob may come close, but he’s not perfect!

Jon Snow

You’d have to be very convincing to persuade this man in black to break his vows. He’s loyal to the Wall like Ghost is loyal to him. Ned Stark’s bastard is kind at heart even with years of Catelyn Stark hating him. Despite Catelyn’s distaste and not knowing the identity of his birth mother, Jon loves his family. He gives Arya a sword called Needle to help her do what she loves. The resemblance to a lost puppy is endearing and Jon has easily found a place in many fans’ hearts.

Theon Greyjoy

If you only watch the show, you hate him. If you’ve finished all the books, your conflicted feelings have turned into sympathy. But nonetheless, Theon is a prince of sorts but always comes in second compared to his sister, Asha, in their father’s eyes. He grew up in the Stark family but lost all of their love when he killed Bran Stark and Rickon Stark, the youngest of the Starks, just for his Dad’s approval and people’s respect. He may be arrogant and cocky but he’s just misunderstood, right?

Robert Baratheon

If you like kings who drink, make jests, and love watching people die from jousting then King Robert is your man! Even though he couldn’t fit into his jousting gear, he has a way with ladies and believes fighting is always the answer. He loves a good laugh and is able to unite two enemies in friendship. The people love him. If you can get over his unfaithfulness to Cersei, you’d make a great match for King Robert.

Joffrey Baratheon

You’d be a future queen if you can handle the narcissistic and abusive side of the boy. No takers? Good choice.

Jaime Lannister

In addition tohaving the best hair in all the lands, the Kingslayer is also the best swordsman. That means, you know, he’s good with his sword. Anyways, he’s the best looking man in Westeros but is faithful to his sister Cersei in more ways than one. He has no problem taking a life or creating a new one, and never loses his footing in the face of war. Prince Charming, anyone?

Tyrion Lannister

The Imp is easily the wittiest character in the entire series and has a lot of power and money. He’s a Lannister after all, even if he’s the least favorite of his siblings, Jaime and Cersei. His intelligence saves his life countless times and he always helps the people he cares about. His respect for women is surprising for society back then and you’d live a lavish, happy life with Tyrion.

If I left out your favorite man-candy, I offer my apologies. My goal was to focus on the main men in the first two books. Other characters become more prominent later in the series and when it airs on TV, they will receive more attention!

The premiere of season three of Game of Thrones airs this Sunday, March 31st on HBO at 9 p.m. Find good company, pop some popcorn, get your fangirl or fanboy on, and appreciate the men of Game of Thrones!
