The frequent incidents of robberies, abductions and sexual aggressions around campus make us feel insecure. Granted the campus security does play an important role in our lives. Although the administration is trying to take action against crime, the truth is that students still experience violence on campus.

The most recent incident was a carjacking in the multipiso parking garage! On March 12, a junior had the terrible experience of being assaulted by a man with a gun. The criminal forced the junior to get in his car and drive him to an ATM to withdraw $200. Fortunately, the 20-year-old victim didn’t suffer any physical injury.

It’s no secret that the security on campus gets worse every day. Thousands of students walk around campus each year and having a safe environment is essentially important to ensure the best college experience. While this clearly isn’t helping much, take precautions yourself to feel a little bit more secure!

Here are some security tips:

  • Avoid walking alone on Campus, especially during the night
  • Become aware of strange environments
  • Look over your shoulder while walking
  • Don’t listen to music, it may get you distracted
  • Don’t walk around dark and lonely places
  • Have a pepper spray accessible
  • Buy a Taser if you need to
  • Try to take self-defense classes
  • Don’t talk to strangers
  • Be alert at all times
