The concept of a “selfie” is one that is all too familiar by now. Apps and websites such as Instagram and Facebook make it impossible to escape them. It’s a fad that is mainly dominated by girls posting pictures of themselves for various reasons.
Mostly, it’s just for fun, but some people could label this increasingly popular trend as unnecessary or overly self-obsessed. However, this should not be the case. As social media gives us new options on ways to express ourselves, old social norms are becoming obsolete. Maybe posing for too many pictures of yourself seemed like odd behavior when there was a need for a second person to be your photographer, but with the invention of a front facing cameras conveniently ready on most cell phones, taking selfies is as easy tapping a screen.
Technology is readily available for us to express what we do in our daily lives and the invention of the hashtag system makes it easier to connect with others who share similar interests. I for one, think selfies are a great way to express yourself. Whether you love the way your makeup came out that day or you’re having a fabulous hair day, selfies should be unabashedly posted whenever you think the occasion calls for it.
What do you think? Are selfies obnoxious or are they a fun way to express yourself? Show us how you do your selfies by using the hashtag: #SFSUselfie with the reason of why you think selfies are okay! It might just end up in our photo album on our Facebook page.
