Weekend Getaway: Florence

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

Finally! Spring term welcomes the sun and us Northwest colligettes can come out of hibernation. After months of torrential downpour, short days, and the occasional flood, we are finally able to enjoy our walks to class.

The first few sunny days full of Frisbee on the Humpy Lumpy Lawn or sand volleyball at the Carson court may be awesome, but we all know the outdoor activities here in Eugene are pretty scarce.  Instead of doing the same old thing everyday, switch it up and take a trip about 60 miles west to the rustic town of Florence, OR.

The beautiful forest drive is considered one of the most scenic in the area and runs into the famous Highway 101. I know you may be skeptical of the things to do in such a small town, but take it from a girl whose childhood memories are filled with running around on the town’s south jetty, Florence is an amazing weekend getaway.

Here’s some ideas for places to visit during a weekend getaway to Florence:

1. The Beach

Shivering water, but soft sand. The best an Oregon beach can be!

2. Old Town

Tons of cute boutiques and silly toy stores. Don’t forget to eat at Mo’s located right on the harbour. Shopping and seafood… what’s not to love?

3. BJ’s Ice Cream

Florence’s version of Prince Pucklers. Try it out and see which ice creamery you like more!

4. Sand Dunes

Miles of sand dunes at your disposal – just you and an ATV. You know you want to.

5. Heceta Head Lighthouse Trail

Just a short hike and this view is all yours.

6.  Sea Lion Caves

The largest Sea Lion Caves in the world! You have to check it out. P.S. they don’t like to be called dog mermaids.

If and when you decide to take a weekend getaway during spring term, I highly recommend Florence. One of the closest escapes from our daily college grind, Florence is definitely a vacation spot to be taken advantage of.
