An Easy Way To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

How often should you wash your makeup brushes? This probably isn’t something you would normally think about, but the truth is, brushes really should be washed every day to keep them completely clean. But who has time for that? We suggest washing your brushes once every weekend when you have more time. Lucky for us there are many different ways to wash your makeup brushes, but here is a quick version that can easily be done weekly.

What you need:

  • Unscented liquid hand soap or baby shampoo
  • Paper towels

How to wash your brushes:

Step 1: Hold your brush vertically with the handle up and the hairs facing down. Wet the hairs under the sink faucet with warm water until they are completely wet.

Step 2: Pour a little bit of soap on your fingers and apply it to the hairs from the handle to hair tips.

Step 3: Keep the hairs facing down and gently squeeze the hairs from handle to hair tips, adding some water each time. Repeat until the water runs clear.

Step 4: Once the soap is all out, brush the hairs off on a paper town and lay them out to dry on a dry towel or paper towel. Make sure the hairs are shaped correctly so they dry in the right direction. Let the brush dry completely before you use them again.

WARNING: Make sure that you don’t get any water or soap inside the handle of your brush. It can cause rust, mold, or deterioration of the glue that holds your brush together. That is why you should hold your brush vertically with the handle facing up and the hairs down anytime you are applying soap or water.
