You’ve gotten the speech from parents, teachers, and friends from a young age: don’t drink and drive. We all know it’s illegal and dangerous, so why is this still a reoccurring problem on our campus? In 2011 there were 417 alcohol related traffic fatalities in North Carolina alone; 34% of the total traffic fatalities for the year. Whether you’ve had 2 mixed drinks or just 1 beer, driving impaired at all is not okay. You may think you feel fine but if you are in an accident (even if it’s not your fault) and have any amount of alcohol in your system under the age of 21 you will receive a DUI no questions asked. So how can you avoid a situation like this? There are many options provided by Appalachian’s campus and the community

Safe Ride

This shuttle service is provided to all students free of charge. It runs 7 days a week from 6:30 pm until 2:15 am. Safe Ride will pick you up and drop you off anywhere on campus. What many people don’t know is that Safe Ride also runs to other campus-related areas such as the APH, Statefarm parking lot, and the Convocation Center.

College Beeper is a website created for students by students. Appalachian student Evan Jarmol launched College Beeper to encourage students to sign up as sober drivers. This website posts phone numbers of 6-10 drivers per night who are willing to drive people to and from bars or parties. Beeper rides usually cost passengers $2-$3 and sober drivers can make up to $100 driving for a few hours on a weekend night. College Beeper even has a mobile website where you can access and call beeper numbers directly from your phone.

Boone Student Beeper

This Facebook group was created to connect drivers and passengers. It is an open group where anyone can post a message to drive or find a ride.  It runs under the same beeper guidelines and is easily accessible with over 2,000 members. Boone Student Beeper is a great resource frequented by Appstate collegiettes.

When in doubt, call a friend! We all have those people that would get out of bed in the middle of the night to make sure we arrive home safely. Everyone makes questionable choices but don’t let one mistake affect the rest of your life. Think before you drink and drive.
