How to summer-proof your look

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arizona chapter.

Summer is weeks away and it’s just getting hotter and hotter. Regardless of where you’ll be once classes end, follow these tips to make sure your makeup (among other things) are set for summer.

Go Waterproof

This shouldn’t be a surprise. Waterproof makeup provides the maximum amount of stay power. If you’re one of those who want a subtle boost to your lashes at the beach (we won’t tell) then waterproof mascara should already be a part of your collection. Or if you’re spending the day at a theme park complete with water rides and barely bearable humidity, you know you’ll be set.

Invest in good primers

Urban Decay and Too Faced have great eye-shadow primers so it’s no surprise that these are the most popular options. However, Nars offers one that’s silky smooth and has amazing stay-power perfect for those with oily eyelids. It’s pricey, but it’s also good quality. As for face primers, find one that’s good for your skin type to ensure whatever concealer, powder or foundation doesn’t melt away.

Set your face

Back in the days when I used to dance competitively, I’ve seen dancers use a mix of hair spray and water to set their makeup and ensure sweat didn’t wash any of their caked-on makeup away. Crazy, I know. Luckily, there are now makeup-setting sprays for that. Urban Decay’s De Slick is the most popular, and for good reasons. It’s the same formula as world famous brand Skindinavia. MAC and even ELF offers a setting spray at lower prices.

TIP: Use your setting spray both before and after you do your makeup to really make things sweat proof!

Seal in your mani/pedi

While Gel nail polish is the way to go, especially if you’re hitting the beach, not everyone wants shell out the cash for that. Choosing a great top-coat is key to perfect nails. Try replenishing the top-coat on your nails every other day to prevent chipping.  Invest in a quick-dry coat for those days when you can’t prevent chipping and need a quick new paint job before you fly out the door.

Protect Your Skin

Sunscreen is important all year round, but especially during summer. Incorporate SPF into your daily routine by mixing your favorite lotion with sunscreen.
