It’s probably safe to say that no one truly enjoys the beginning of the school year. Of course welcome week is always super fun, but the beginning of fall semester is usually stressful. Getting into the groove of your brand new schedule is difficult especially after a week of attending parties rather than class! There’s no easy way to transition yourself from long, hot summer days to early morning classes and late nights at the UGLI.

But don’t worry because you’re not alone! Almost everyone gets a case of the ‘back to school blues’ at some point or another because switching your brain from play mode to work mode is always tough. Although everyone has her own way of adjusting to the start of the new semester, there are some great ways to help students stay cool, calm and collected as the homework load gets heavier.

Don’t Underestimate Sleep!

The first thing to do during the beginning of the school year is to start a consistent sleeping routine. Going to bed same time each night and waking up at the same time every morning can be extremely beneficial.  You’ll feel more refreshed when you wake up and won’t be as tired during a long day of classes. Having a regulated sleep schedule improves your productivity and energy during the day so that you can power through your classes without feeling worn-out. By starting off your semester with a stable sleeping schedule, you’ll be much more capable of managing your academic and social life!

Squeeze in the Exercise 

Hitting the gym is another great habit to start up as the beginning of the semester rolls around. Any type of exercise will boost your energy; whether it’s a trip to the CCRB in-between classes or a jog in the Arb. Working out is a guaranteed way to brighten up your day because it creates endorphins (chemicals in your body) that make you feel more peaceful and relaxed. Not only does exercising improve your mental, emotional and physical health, but also it provides a much-needed break in your day away from school and studying.

Organize, Organize, Organize

Another great way to transition yourself into the new semester is by getting organized. Buying a daily planner, or using a calendar application on your phone, is a sure-fire way to make sure you keep up with your hectic schedule. You can write out everything and anything from homework assignments and test dates to social plans and extracurricular meetings. A calendar or planner will help you prioritize what assignments need to be completed first and will help you remember important dates! And having current and future commitments written out will show you how much time you have to do everything so that you won’t feel overwhelmed!

The beginning of the school year is always stressful, but getting a good nights sleep, staying active and getting organized can help you ease into the school year with as little worry and stress as possible!
