The University of Georgia is public institution. Public, in fashion terms, meaning you can wear whatever you want; however you want. Yet, there seems to be an unspoken uniform code for ladies at UGA.  There are two versions of this uniform:

  1. Spring/Summer: running shorts, baggy t-shirts with a company logo and some form of a modern day Jesus sandal
  2. Fall/Winter: Leggings, baggy t-shirts with a company logo, oversized sweaters, and running sneakers.

Why do girls wear these homely fashions outside? There’s a variety of reasons:

  1. Running late to class and need to put on something quick
  2. Too lazy to pick out a proper outfit
  3. Too confident to care what people think about an outfits
  4. Too stressed out to care about an outfit
  5. Going from class to class should be considered a ‘work-out’
  6. Silent peer-pressure- ‘every girl does it, I’ll do it to!’

These comfy uniforms do not attract prospective suitors nor do they give off a good impression. You would not see Audrey Hepburn in running shorts and a baggy t-shirt. The lady bulldawgs need to channel our inner Audrey and bring fashion to the streets of UGA! But, How does one go about doing so?

Leggings: Whoever says leggings are not pants has never worn leggings out and about. They are the most comfortable clothing item to wear. They also go really nicely with a pair of cute boots. So when you’re wearing leggings-swap out the Nike free runs for some Steve Madden’s .

Oversized t-shirts: Not having a blouse constrict your chest is extremely freeing and it’s totally understandable to have a ridiculous amount of oversized shirts in your closet. To still make use of those shirts, try trading in those running shorts for high-waisted shorts. Tuck it out a bit and make it hang over the shorts ever so slightly.  It gives  ‘put together, yet free’ look that will make you look and feel good.

Oversized/Outdoors Sweaters: While Patagonia and Northface sweaters are ridiculously warm and cozy- you would never see Coco Chanel wearing one.  To be more fabulous like Coco, try wearing knitted sweaters with patterns or a pop of color. If you’re still cold, pop a motorcycle jacket on. That paired with leggings and boots will complete an outfit.

So the next time you’re thinking about wearing your ‘uniform’ to school, be a rebel.  Keep the sports wear on the field and your high heels in the hallway.
