There’s about to be a new voice of sports radio on campus.
Greg Benson, a sports media senior, is one of the new hosts for Oklahoma State’s KXZY which comes on every Monday evening.
Benson said he did his first show last Monday from 3 – 5 p.m.. He said he got the gig as a host by signing up through the broadcast and journalism department.
“Right now, a lot of people don’t know about it as much so right now it’s just through word of mouth,” Benson said. “If you type in ‘KXZY’ in Google though, it should pop up.”
He said on the show, him and a co-host will be talking about everything sports-related and having the listeners join in as well if they so choose.
“Soon, people will have the opportunity to call in,” Benson said. “They can ask us questions or talk with us and comment on something we’re talking about.”
Being a senior, Benson said his ultimate dream after he graduates would be to be a broadcaster for a National Hockey Team.
“I would want to be a broadcaster for a team like the Dallas Stars,” Benson said. “But they already have two guys who have been there forever so they might be a little hard to replace.”
A piece of advice that Benson would like to give any sports media majors who are just starting out, is to write.
“Seriously, know how to write,” Benson said. “Even if you’re on the broadcast side of things, people will expect you to have good writing skills. Also, just do as much stuff ahead of time. For me, this is the first year that I’m really learning how to do stuff like use the radio and shoot on the camera. Just get a head start. Learn ahead of time.”
