From Dawn to Dusk: On the Go

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Running from work to play may have us stopping to catch our breath while we frantically try to pick out what seems like our sixth outfit of the day.  If only we could get by with wearing khakis and t-shirts 90 percent of the time. (Yes, I’m looking at you boys!) On top of attending classes, studying, and participating in extra-curriculars, we still manage to salvage what little time there is left in the day to put in that extra effort and energy into planning out our outfits.  Have you ever wished you could figure out ways to cut down on the time and money spent on your wardrobe?  Using these ideas, you can transition your outfits from day to night in a snap and bring new life to forgotten pieces lost in the back of your closet.

Jeans:

Probably the most versatile item in your closet, jeans can be worn with pretty much anything.  One of my favorite ways to style jeans during the day is with an oversized, chunky sweater and boots.  Adding a wrap watch with detailing and beading is an easy and quick way to accessorize your outfit without having to give it much thought.  For the nighttime look, swap out your boots for some wedges.  They give you a generous boost in height and are much easier to walk in than heels – these black Steve Madden wedges are by far the most comfortable pair I have ever worn.  A coral blazer is the perfect option for a pop of color.  Top off the look by layering on your favorite necklaces.

Little Black Dress:

We all have that one classic style staple – it’s the LBD.  Dress your LBD down by pairing it with a simple statement necklace, flats and a jean jacket.  It is a simple yet put together look that’s perfect for hiking all around campus.  Going out to a fancy restaurant right after class? Simply step into your favorite nude heels, – another vital staple – throw on a sparkly bracelet, a ring or two, grab your purse and strut out the door.

Skirts:

Did you ever think you could get away with wearing a floral skirt (thought to be appropriate only during daylight hours) out on the town?  You better have because it is completely feasible!  To stay comfy throughout the day, wrap up in a cardigan that is similar in color to the pattern of the skirt.  Once your work is done and it’s time to play, trade in the cardigan for a leather jacket.  This will roughen up the girlie vibe of the floral print and make it appropriate for the evening.  Complete the outfit with a pair of brightly colored Mary Jane’s and you are good to go!

No matter what you are wearing during the day, there is always a way to transform it into a nighttime look that will have everyone staring.  Here are some general tips for transforming your own outfits:

  • Accessorize! Layer necklaces, stack bracelets, wear cocktail rings – anything that adds some shimmer and sparkle!  Keep in mind that it’s a little easy to get carried away and your outfit could end up looking tacky, so stick to only two to three of these at a time.
  • Leather.  Basically anything that you wear with a jean jacket will look equally as good with a leather one.  Don’t be afraid to rock this edgy trend!
  •  Bright colors!  Sometimes a nighttime outfit can end up looking too drab because our tendency is to grab darker shades of clothing.  You can easily fix this problem by adding a colorful belt, wearing bright shoes, or carrying a neon clutch or cross-body bag.
