Phobias – We All Have Them!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

Halloween is near and we are busy thinking about finding the perfect costume that makes us look adorable, classy and sexy all at the same time. Plus, figuring out what party we are going to celebrate the spooky holiday. Halloween is a lot of fun because you get all dressed up, be silly with friends, and eat a ridiculous amount of candy. It’s also that time of year you go to the pumpkin patch, haunted houses, and watch scary movies.

But there can be some downsides of this time of year.  If you are a baby like me, it reminds you of all the things you are afraid of.  Halloween brings out all of our phobias.  There are some crazy ones but the most common I’m sure we can all relate to a few.

Arachnophobia – the fear of spiders

Ugh, spiders are the worst! They are normally big, black, furry and the worst is when they have fangs.  I will give my entire apartment to a spider until someone else is home to kill it. Even though we know they won’t hurt us spiders are something that most of us girls are afraid of.

Ophidiophobia – the fear of snakes

Most of these come from your own personal experiences or cultural influences. Having a long snake slither all over you may be one of the worse things you could ever encounter.  Why do you think shows like ‘Fear Factor’ put people in a glass box full of snakes? Because it is terrifying!

Acrophobia – the fear of heights

Have you ever had a dream that you are falling to your death? Heights can be very scary especially because there is nothing you can really do, except breathe and hope for the best. Even with that said, this phobia is normally something that you can work on and put yourself in positions where you can be high up even when you’re scared

Agoraphobia – the fear of situations where the escape could be difficult

Whether you or someone you know has this phobia, feeling claustrophobic is a very common fear.  Feeling like you are trapped is like getting the air sucked out of your lungs.  I think one of the most common and terrifying fears that tie into this is being buried alive.  So, this Halloween season, stay away from any tiny rooms with a scary man nearby.

Astraphobia – the fear of thunder and lightning

Curious as to why there always thunder and lightning before something scary happens in a scary movie?  Everyone has experienced this at one point but even though it is nerve wrecking and you huddle with your friends with the blanket covering your eyes; being scared is half the fun.  Storms can be very scary but they are always great for Halloween slumber parties.

So, whether you are a scaredy-cat or a dare devil, enjoy this Halloween month to the fullest.  Take yourself out of your comfort zone and do something that scares you.  It may be terrifying at first but I’m sure you’ll be happy that you took the plunge and got over your fears.
