Spend a few nights out at Georgetown and you will quickly observe a striking similarity among the carefully crafted outfits of the Georgetown females: chunky necklaces.  They sound silly, but in fact are quite serious. The correct chunky necklace proves it can elevate an outfit from good to great.

So what is a chunky necklace?  Well, that’s up to you.  In more formal terms, a chunky necklace is a statement piece: it’s a necklace that is bold and says, “look at me!”  Other than that, it can be pretty much any style.

Shopping for a chunky necklace, you might think some of the styles are ridiculous.  I mean, there’s just no way anyone would ever think the jewels on your necklace are real, right?  Of course not.  But that’s the point!  The chunky necklace embraces costume jewelry and runs with it.  The bigger, the better.

Some styles are made with colorful cuts of plastic jewels.  Others might feature oversized pearls or faux-diamonds.  You can find choker-style pieces or longer chains depending on what suits your style, your outfit, and your mood.

One great bonus of the chunky necklace is that it looks more expensive than it is.  You can find nice necklaces at stores like J.Crew, H&M, Target, and other large retailers.  I’ve also had good luck at Ella Rue, a small boutique near the intersection of Wisconsin and P Street.

If you’ve been in a wardrobe rut, the chunky necklace could save your day.  Even if you’re just wearing a plain old tee shirt and jeans, the right chunky necklace will cleverly disguise your outfit into seeming oh-so party appropriate.  Just grab your chunky necklace and you’re ready for a night out.
