Growing up, Halloween used to mean dressing up in silly costumes, collecting candy from neighbors and eating enough chocolate to make your stomach sick. Although most college students have left the trick-or-treating days long behind, there are still plenty of options for students that want to have a good time this Halloween season. While taking a break from studying for that midterm, or staying in to fight off that cold, take a look at these events in San Francisco that are sure to be a witchin’ time.

1.     Movie Screening of  “The Conjuring” and “The Shining”

San Francisco State University students looking to stay close to home can watch these films for free at the screenings on campus. “The Conjuring,” will be playing from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 28 at the Amphitheater. The 1980 horror classic, “The Shining,” will also be playing from 4 to 6 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween night. This is an ideal event for students who want to keep things low-key and affordable while still getting a good scare. More information is available at the Cesar Chavez Student Center website.

2.     Nightmare on Holloway

Looking for something more upbeat? Student Life at SF State presents Nightmare on Holloway, a dance party for San Francisco State University students. The event is free and runs from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 25 at the Cesar Chavez Student Center. SF State students are able to bring one guest, as long as they are over 18 years of age. Make sure to bring a student I.D. for admission. For more information, check out the Facebook event page

3.     The Dead: An Interactive Zombie Haunt

Halloween wouldn’t be complete without a scare or two. “The Dead: An Interactive Zombie Haunt” will be at the Chicken John’s Warehouse on Cesar Chavez Street and will put guests in the midst of undead galore. Tickets are $20 each. More details are available at the event website.

4.     Haunted House of Horrors

If you want to go all out this Halloween, the Haunted House of Horrors might be for you. The Old Mint is an historic landmark that dates from 1874 and was once one of the most bustling sites for gold production. This Halloween, the landmark has been transformed into a haunted house with “25 Champers of Horror.” The different chambers will please thrill seekers of all kinds with themes ranging from the “Torture Chamber” to “Children of the Damned.” The event isn’t all tricks, though. Satisfy your sweet tooth at the “Creepy Candy” that sells Halloween themed candies. Those over 21 years of age can order drinks from a “Blood Bar.” The event will span over 6 nights from October 26 to the 31 with ticket prices ranging anywhere from around $35 or up to $50 on Halloween night. For details about the event, and to check out other things this event has to offer, check out the Haunted House of Horrors website.
