Homecoming Queen, Tyla Marie Young

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.
How old are you?
o I am 21 years old and a senior here at Ohio University.
– What made you want to run for Homecoming Queen?
o I knew in previous years that they had a homecoming Court but last year I didn’t run, so I thought that would be fun for my senior year. So this year, when they sent out an email for nominations, I nominated myself. It was kind of something random that I never thought I would win. Here, I thought have a better chance of winning than I would have in a high school homecoming court. I’m much more social now than I was in high school too, so this worked out.
– What was your favorite thing about Homecoming Week this year?
o Definitely the parade.  It was really nice, we were walking behind the Marching 110 so we got to hear all of their stuff. Even after we were done, we got to stay and watch the parade and the alumni band, and they are badass. They just got better with age. And I got to wave to all the little babies. It was a little early in the morning for me though.
– What events did you have to participate in as Homecoming Queen/do you have any future duties to fulfill?
o Most of my duties wrap up with Homecoming week.  It’s a great honor and everything, but we don’t necessarily have any duties afterward.  I want to get more involved with things now, like the OU Women’s Center, and I know that I can do it after wining Homecoming Queen.  I just think, if I can accomplish this, can you imagine what I could do with something that would actually change lives, you know?
– Who is your King?
o His name is Christian Brucey. He is a senior.  I think this year they only did a senior court, although last year they had class representatives too.  We had ten people from the senior class.  We had a lot of events that Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, so we all got to know each other really well. Everyone was so nice and all the others girl deserved Queen just as much as I did.
– What is your favorite thing about going to Ohio University?
o This might be a little corny, but just those little moments when I’m walking to class and I think “Wow… I’m really going to college here.” The campus is so beautiful, it’s just a blessing to be here.  To think about how far I have come within last year, I’m just in a good place here.
– Do you hold any other offices within the University?
o I cant necessarily run for more because I’m a senior, but I’m president of Black Student Union, a member of Alpha Phi Omega, and I intern at Athens Children Services.
– What do you do there?
o I work in the family support unit, so I work more with the family than just with children.  I’m a psychology major and a social work minor, and I’m going to go into social work for graduate school, so I really enjoy my internship there.  I’m looking at 4 schools for graduate school, and I really want to work in the inner city.  Ohio University has a graduate program for social work, but it’s tailored more towards rural social work.
