While you were partaking in all the wonderful Homecoming festivities on Temple’s campus, a lot happened beyond our cherry and white walls this week. Here are a few things in the news that you might want to know about.

1. HUZZAH! The government is back in business. Though will this really change anything? President Obama and Congress avoided a default, but are still very much so divided on budgetary issues. There could potentially be another government shutdown on January 16, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that they’ll sort themselves out soon.

2. The little half-blood prince George Alexander Louis (a.k.a. the future king of the United Kingdom) will be christened on Wednesday at The Chapel Royal in London. It’s a joyous occasion for the royal family, but honestly — we’re just curious about what mama Kate Middleton will wear.

3.  Three women were attacked in Juniata Park since last Thursday and the City of Philadelphia “is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction” of the man suspected of committing the crimes. One of the victims was sexually assaulted and the other two managed to escape. Philadelphia Police released a sketch of the suspect, who was captured on surveillance footage.

4. Nobel Peace Prize nominee Malala Yousufzai met Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II on Friday when the latter invited the 16-year-old activist to Buckingham Palace. Yousufzai is lauded for her education activism in her home country of Pakistan. Her story is quite remarkable — she narrowly escaped death after the Taliban shot her in the head for her work in promoting education for young girls. She was rushed to Birmingham, England for major surgery and currently resides there.

5. Elle magazine has been scrutinized for covering up Melissa McCarthy on their annual “Women in Hollywood” issue. The fashion glossy also has alternate covers with Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley and Penelope Cruz, who were not completely bundled up like McCarthy on their covers. Is Elle shading the comedienne’s curvy physique with this move? The magazine defended its decision to feature McCarthy in a coat, stating: “On all of our shoots, our stylists work with the stars to choose pieces they feel good in, and this is no different: Melissa loved this look, and is gorgeous on our cover.”
