Your alarm goes off for your 8 am class. You check the date, it’s the first day of October. Every girl knows what this means… TIME TO PICK OUT A SUPER INCREDIBLE HALLOWEEN COSTUME. A quick visit to your local Halloween store reveals these options: sexy nurse, sexy bumblebee, sexy policeman, basically a sexy version of every costume. These poorly manufactured costumes generally contain stockings, a headband or hat of some sort, and a dress so tight and short it would make your great-grandmother roll over in her grave. So what if that isn’t your thing? Here are 3 costume options to make your great-grandmother proud:
- Rosie the Riveter is easily one the most iconic images in American history. She not only represents patriotism, she also serves as a symbol of classic female empowerment. The Rosie look is pretty easy and cheap to pull off.
- Start with a basic light-wash denim work shirt with long sleeves. If you don’t already have one, Goodwill has a ton for super cheap. Tuck the shirt into darker wash jeans. Finish it off with a brown belt and shoes of your choice.. I cuffed my skinny jeans twice and wore my vintage brown ankle boots.
- Mastering the hair/bandana combination can be tricky. YouTube has at least a dozen good tutorials to help you out! Check out my favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hln-UEvhJN0 Make sure you pin the bandana to your head or else you might end up losing it halfway through the night.
- Finish off the look with red lipstick and simple eye makeup. For extra sass, paint your nails red!
- Your costume is now complete! Be sure to take at least one picture (or a dozen!) in the classic Rosie the Riveter pose to show off your awesome muscles.
- Katniss Everdeen is the fierce heroine of The Hunger Games. Not only does she hunt game illegally to feed her family, she also wins The Hunger Games and openly defies the Capitol in doing so, which is a pretty big deal. Her look is relatively easy to master, and you most likely already have these items in your closet.
- Start with a black v-neck and pair it with olive-green pants
- Since the weather will be chilly, throw on black outdoorsy jacket. Don’t be afraid to venture into leather jacket territory, but avoid a motorcycle style one.
- Add weathered boots and a side-braid to complete your look. Keep your makeup pretty simple After all, Katniss does live in District 12.
- Everyone knows Amelia Earhart is a total hero: she was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set a ton of records, got lots of awards and recognition and even wrote a few books. Achieving the Amelia Earhart look is a little bit harder and more expensive but definitely worth the effort.
- Start with a leather bomber jacket (preferably in a brown shade -you can find images of a classic aviator bomber jacket online for inspiration) over a plain white shirt, khaki pants with a skinny leg, and tall brown leather riding boots or brown combat boots.
- For extra personality, you can add a scarf – patterned or plain – over your jacket.
- You have two options when it comes to head gear: you can wear the traditional aviator cap and goggles (pro – you don’t have to fix your hair, con – you might look silly) or you can go with a more modern look and nix the cap/goggles combination altogether. An aviator cap and goggle set can be purchased on Amazon.com.
The most important thing to remember with any Halloween costume is to HAVE FUN. Find a one you are comfortable in and don’t be afraid to rock it. You do not have to fit any sort or image or sterotype. Halloween is the one time of year where you can let loose and be literally anyone you want to be! So be creative and be confident with whatever costume you choose, and you will have an amazing, memorable night!
