October came to a close and the student body reflected on all of the fundraising and awareness events that took place on campus: breast cancer awareness, domestic violence awareness, and even a bake sale put on by Her Campus WVWC to benefit She’s the First scholars. Student involvement is an integral part of the college experience; this does not differ for Wesleyan. Involved groups range from sororities to fraternities, from academic organizations to numerous athletic teams, and they allow students to feel as though they belong, that they might have a “home among the hills.”

The Bobcat Volleyball team has done an exceptional job of displaying the Wesleyan family love. During October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, the volleyball team played a “Dig Pink” game to raise money and awareness for the cause. Students and faculty had the opportunity to buy shirts to support breast cancer awareness while players and coaches wore pink during the game. This year, however, the game was slightly different than in the past.

The volleyball team conducted an awareness event as well as fundraised. They played a “Digs for Dawn” game in honor of a mother to one of our very own Bobcats, freshman Rachel Smith. Dawn passed away in April after losing her battle to Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a cancer of the connective tissue in the body. At the game, Rachel and her family were honored, and there was a moment of silence. Neon orange “Digs for Dawn” t-shirts were sold. All of the proceeds went to the family. Despite the loss, the volleyball team did more than just play to win—they played for a cause.

Bobcat pride lives on through the help of our loving teams.
