You probably know about the family board game Apples to Apples, “the hilarious game of comparisons,” which features cards with random nouns and adjectives for players to pair up and create hilarious combinations to vote on. It’s a great game to play with the family on a weekend home or even with some girlfriends!
There are a few different variations of Apples to Apples (Party Box, Kids Edition, Disney edition, To Go, etc.), but nothing so different as Apples to Apples Big Picture, the new version that just came out. I got a few of my girlfriends together to eat candy corn, watch the Red Sox game and test out this hilarious new game!
The classic Apples to Apples game simply consists of two stacks of differently colored cards. The green cards feature various adjectives like “smelly,” “agonizing,” “chilly” – pretty much anything you could think of. The red cards feature various nouns, which can be anything from “Abe Lincoln” to “grilled cheese” to “Tokyo.” Players have to match up a red card from their hand with a green card on the table, and the judging player picks his or her favorite combination. The player with the most winning combinations wins the game.
The Big Picture variation of Apples to Apples offers a cool new twist: instead of nouns, the red cards are now pictures—the most interesting, wacky, unpredictable pictures! My friends and I picked up photos of everything from lemurs to Mr. Rushmore to Santa Claus. The results? The weirdest (and most hilarious) combinations! Honestly, the game’s tagline, “Proves that a picture is worth 1000 words … and a million laughs!” rings true. I’ve always thought the wacky combinations of nouns and adjectives were fun, but pictures make it much more entertaining.
There’s another new aspect in Apples to Apples Big Picture: the Apple Chips. Originally, players would just collect the green (adjective) cards for the rounds they won. In the Big Picture version, they’ve added Apple Chips, which a player now collects if they win a round. The first player with five Apple Chips wins the game. Though I love the original Apples to Apples (it brings back memories of family game night!), the Big Picture version feels a little more modern, convenient (because of the Apple Chips) and hilariously entertaining. If you’re a big board game fan or just looking for a fun Friday night in, my friends and I totally recommend Big Picture!
