How To Make Your Dorm Into A Holiday Wonderland

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

While there aren’t many weeks of December that we spend on campus (sad face) that just means that we get to decorate our dorms that much earlier! No matter what you celebrate – whether it’s Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice or you just want an excuse to get crafty – here are some simple and inexpensive ways to turn your boring dorm room into a holiday haven!

Christmas: If you live in a suite, have all your roommates buy stockings and line your common area or bathroom with them! Target sells cute and colorful stockings along with mini Christmas trees that you can sit on your desk. Hang some garland around your windows to get a twinkling effect without the lights! Decorating doesn’t just mean the inside of the room, though; if you really want to get into the holiday spirit, take wrapping paper and cover the outside of your door. You can let your imagination run wild and turn it into anything from a Christmas present to a cozy fireplace scene!

Hanukkah: Start by decorating your room with a silver and blue color scheme! Instead of hanging snowflakes or Christmas ornaments from your walls, buy or make little dreidels to hang! And while you may not be able to really light the Menorah, there is no reason that you can’t buy an electric one. Gather some of your friends, Jewish or not, and conduct the ceremony and traditions for the night in your room. Pinterest also has some really cool and easy craft ideas for Hanukkah wreaths and other decorations!

Winter Solstice: Coming back from Winter Break can be depressing, can’t it? So, here are some cute decorating ideas to bring life back to your room! Turn your front door into a penguin or even better, transform your fridge into a snowman with fun stickers and leftover wrapping paper! Remember your elementary school days of cutting random pieces of paper and turning them into snowflakes? Put your creative side to work and hang snowflakes all around your room! Finally, grab some window markers and draw snow scenes on your windows. Don’t forget to grab some hot chocolate and a blanket and relax!
