For me, lights have always been a very significant part of my holiday season; their distinctive glow really does bring me pure happiness. This year, as mid-October rolled around and we were able to put holiday lights up in our dorms, I found myself in a fantastic mood nearly every day. I spent a good two hours putting up the lights in my room, of course while listening to the N*SYNC Christmas Pandora station. I found myself walking around campus at night, gazing up at dorm room windows to see who had put their lights up.
One of my closest friends visited my room, and she commented on my lights. I instantly began rambling on about how much I love holiday lights, and how my room had felt so warm and inviting after I put them up. After my ten-minute long rant, I realized something. Holiday lights make me happy not just because they’re pretty, but because they remind me of home.
Christmas decorating is a big deal at my house, it’s our tradition to buy a ten-foot high (oftentimes, higher) Christmas tree and decorate the entire thing with white lights and white, red, and gold ornaments. I was always in awe of our Christmas tree, every year it was truly stunning. My new obsession with holiday lights in college came, I think, from homesickness. Putting holiday lights up in my room signifies tradition, the love I have for my family, and my favorite time of year.
Not everyone may have the same experience with holiday lights that I do. Nonetheless, holiday lights can make people happy for a multitude of reasons. Some people suffer from seasonal depression, and especially when it gets dark before five o’clock, this time of year can be really hard for those who suffer from this condition.
It’s also nice to change the look of your room with some holiday lights—let’s face it, no matter how much we all love BC, it can get to be a little too much sometimes. By sprucing up your room with some holiday lights, you invite a spirit of change into your room, and it can make all the difference in your mood.
No matter what your story is with the holidays, it’s difficult not to get in to the holiday spirit. So, invest in some holiday lights, trust me, you won’t regret it!
