Campus Gem: 157 Holmes Hall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

You need to work on a project with some friends, so you go to the library. You walk in and, as usual, the first floor is crowded. You go up to the second floor, still crowded. You go up to the third floor, but it’s just too quiet. And you shudder to think what the atmosphere would be like on the fourth floor!

But have you thought about going to the computer lab located in 157 Holmes Hall? Well, neither did I. For starters, the building can be a little confusing. I’ve been in and out of the building quite a few times already and I still get lost. Adding to the confusion, it’s located in Lake Hall, which is home to a few other halls.

But once you get over the initial confusion, you’ll come to realize how much of a gem 157 Holmes Hall really is! Here are a few reasons why:

  1. It has desktop computers that anyone can use, just in case your laptop is dead.
  2. Free print-outs! While you may not use up all of your printing allowance, it’s nice to know that this resource is here if you need it.
  3. It’s never crowded! Since not many people know about it, it’s usually pretty clear.
  4. It’s a great place to work on group projects with friends and classmates! Yes, it is pretty quiet, but that’s just because no one’s around. Don’t be afraid of bringing friends in to work with you.
  5. If you are in any of the West Villages or in Kariotis, it’s way more convenient than walking all the way over to the library! Lake Hall is literally right across the street from Kariotis.

But before you go rushing over to 157 Holmes Hall, keep these three things in mind:

  1. It’s open from 8 AM to 5 PM, which is great for if you need to go in between classes. If you’re looking for somewhere to study around midnight, 157 Holmes Hall is definitely not for you.
  2. Eating is prohibited when you are at the computers, but you’re welcome to eat anywhere else in the room.
  3. Some nights, closer to 4:30, there is a class in 157 Holmes Hall. On those days, the computers are reserved for the students.

But what if you stop by and 157 Holmes Hall doesn’t seem right for you. Don’t worry! Consider these other options:

  1. 553 Lake Hall. The Math Department’s computer lab comes with some added benefits. It’s staffed with student mentors who can assist you with math, software, and hardware issues, at no extra charge!
  2. 208, 268, and 274 Snell Engineering. These belong to the College of Engineering and are also open for student use.

With so many options available, there’s just no excuse for not getting work done!

Northeastern

My name is Hope and I'm a Communication Studies major. I chose to be a Communication Studies major because I love learning about different media and how each type affects the audience in a different way. Also, this major puts me on the path toward a publishing job, which is important to me. I was born in Oakland, California and raised in Richmond, California, but I've lived in South Jersey for the past five years. Some of my interests include playing tennis, watching tennis, and spending time with my friends and family.
