BC In Review: My Mother’s Fleabag Show

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

A few weekends ago, my friends and I ventured to Upper Campus to the O’Connell House. For those of you wondering why we would ever do such a thing, I have three words for you: My Mother’s Fleabag. The trek up all the stairs was fully worthwhile once the lights dimmed, and the annual “My Mother’s Fleabag” show began.

For those who aren’t familiar, My Mother’s Fleabag is one of BC’s improv comedy groups. It was founded in 1980 and is the oldest collegiate improvisational comedy group in the nation. And yes, the rumors you heard are true: Amy Poehler did start her comedic career as a Fleabager. The group– composed of all BC undergrads– practices mainly short-form improv, with some long-form improv comedy and sketches thrown into the mix as well. They perform one big show each semester, with smaller café shows on campus and around the Boston area as well.

I went to one of their Big Show performances, and I honestly cannot remember the last time I laughed so hard. The show was absolutely hysterical and all the Fleabagers are so incredibly talented. It amazes me how these people can be so hilarious right on the spot! The show consisted of various improv routines that required audience participation and involvement. They also performed some rehearsed sketches in costumes, which were equally as funny and reminded me of SNL skits.

The show lasted about an hour, and I was entertained for every minute of it. The O’Connell House was packed, and my friends and I were lucky to have gotten the very last few tickets for the night. Needless to say, I will be attending many more of their performances, and I recommend that you do too! To learn more about their group and their future show times and even watch some funny promo videos, check out their Facebook page and Twitter:

If you missed the Fleabag big show, but still want to see some improv, check out another BC improv group, “Hello…Shovelhead!”
