2014 is fast approaching; a New Year full of new opportunities, new people to meet and places to go to. Why not start with the first day? Get a group of friends together, pack your bags and head off on a new adventure.

Parfait in Paris

Why go: Who wouldn’t want to watch a fireworks display from the Eiffel tower? Amazing gastronomic experiences, cocktails and champagne, shopping and French guys, need I say more?

How: The Eurostar from London is cheap and easy. You could also grab a quick flight to Orly, Charles de Gaulle or Beauvais; book early for the best deals.

Where to stay: Apartment: rent a flat via AirBnb.com or Homeaway.com,

Hostel: Go for somewhere recommended! MIJE and Auberge Internationale des Juenes are well-known.

Hotel (it is New Year!): Five HĂ´tel and HĂ´tel Aviatic

Happy New Year: Bonne Anneé (et bonne santé)

Cool Cracow

Why go: Guaranteed snow and a different New Years Eve. Where rock concerts and cathedral bells go hand-in-hand. Cheap alcohol and crazy Polish people.

How: Cheap flight with EasyJet and Sun Air of Scandinavia (both direct)

Where to stay: Cheap: Goodbye Lenin Hostel

Mid-range: Qubus Hotel KrakĂłw

Happy New Year: Szczęśliwego nowego roku (Good luck pronouncing that!)

Traditions and tacos in Mexico

Why go: Fancy celebrating New Years Eve on a beach? Mexico is for the warm blooded. Delicious spicy food and tequila shots will make this trip unforgettable. The people are incredibly welcoming, but don’t let their weird traditions fool you; when it comes to party planning, they know how it works.

How: Depending on where in Mexico you are going, check the cheapest fares on momondo.com

Where to stay: Again, depending on where you are going, check hotels.com or book an apartment via AirBnb.com or HomeAway.com

Happy New Year: Feliz Año Nuevo

Celina Sofie Gylthe
Second year Economics student

I have always loved traveling and visiting new places which led me to move from my home country Norway to the country with a big love for fancy dress and traditions. A year later I am starting to getting use to the British way of living. Besides studying at Durham University I enjoy skiing, dancing and playing lacrosse. I also have a keen interest in fashion, art, design and architecture.

xx
Hey! I am a second year student at Durham University studying Sociology and Anthropology. I love writing and spending time with people and so cannot wait to start a HerCampus Chapter at Durham.
