13 Songs That Will Make Your Friends Say “Wait…What?”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

One of my favorite things to do is make my friends listen to really weird songs and watch their reactions. I have a collection of songs I tend to get the best responses from; most of them I have no idea where they came from—sometimes I feel like they just show up on my iPod out of the blue. I suggest you try to keep a straight face while listening to the following songs and, if you like them, play them for your friends and see what they say!

1. “Marry Me” by Emilie Autumn

Emilie Autumn draws her inspiration from classical music to electronica, creating her own style of music that she calls “fairy pop” or “Victoriandustrial.” She’s also a talented violinist and poet, which she incorporates into her music. Her song “Marry Me” sounds like it could be from an opera until you actually listen to the lyrics…

2. “Boom! I Got Your Boyfriend” by M.C. Luscious

Rapper M.C. Luscious specialized in bass music, popular in the early-to mid-1990s. Her song “Boom! I Got Your Boyfriend” was her most popular single, released in 1991.

3. “White Kids Love Hip Hop” by MC Chris (feat. Andy Merrill)

This is my favorite song to play for my friends. I am proud to say that I know most of the lyrics and tend to sing along, but I have no idea how I found the song or how it ended up on my iPod. “White Kids Love Hip Hop” features voice actor Andy Merrill (from a bunch of Cartoon Network shows).

4. “F*ck Like a Star” by Porcelain and the Tramps

Warning! If you don’t want to listen to a song basically made up of swear words, don’t listen to this song! Nevertheless, the song exploits the fact that American media does not allow curse words on air or published in print.

5. “F*ck Her Gently” by Tenacious D

Let’s be honest—any of Tenacious D’s songs could be on this list! (Psst! Tenacious D is made up of comedian Jack Black and guitarist Kyle Gass.) “F*ck Her Gently” is my favorite, however, because it’s so easy to sing along with.

6. “Makeup” by Vanity 6

Vanity 6 was put together by Prince for a number of highly-sexualized reasons, but the band was only together for two years before splitting up. Their song “Makeup” is extremely entertaining when you’re getting ready for a night out on the town.

7. “Crazy Rap (Colt 45 and 2 Zig Zags)” by Afroman

A song about marijuana is probably not what a majority of you are interested in, but listen to the lyrics—they’re pretty hilarious. The song is also super catchy and will probably get stuck in your head for a while.

8. “Frontier Psychiatrist” by The Avalanches

“Frontier Psychiatrist” is basically just composed of numerous samples from other songs, TV shows, and movies. According to a group member of The Avalanches, the song was not planned out but resulted in the band just playing around. Nonetheless, it’s nothing like what you’ve ever heard before.

9. “Matalij Ja Mustii (The Binky Song)” by Värttinä

You probably recognize this song from Arthur, when it was sung by Binky Band. I like to see how long it takes my friends to place where the song is from, especially since it is in Finnish and the “ui ui ui” is so recognizable.

10. “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell” by Das Racist

I first heard this song over the summer when my friend and I drove to the beach. We sat for at least five minutes after the song was over, just wondering what we had listened to. Once we had gotten over the shock, we may have listened to it a couple of times in a row because it’s so catchy.

11. “Fashionista” by Jimmy James

Weirdly enough, I danced to this when I was in high school. One of my friends brought the song in and we all thought it was so funny that we had to include it in one of our choreographed pieces. The song was performed by a drag queen and actually charted when it was released in 2006.

12. “It’s My Life” by Cezar

Not trying to give anything away, but “It’s My Life” was performed by the Romanian opera singer in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. It placed 13th, but became a cult hit around Europe after the competition.

13. “The Stalker Song” by Charlotte Martin

Nothing beats a creepy stalking song. Even I get a little weirded out listening to this song, but I just love it so much that I don’t care.

Don’t be afraid to play weird songs for your friends. They can be a great source for laughter and jokes—my friends and I can just say a line from one of the above songs and we’ll start laughing. Strange songs are written, produced, and sung for a reason—they’re meant to be listened to. Don’t feel ashamed about liking something that may have been made as a joke or isn’t considered popular; if you like it, like it.
