There’s been a lot of hype about Spoon University, an online food publication, adding the University of Michigan as one of its campus chapters. I got the chance to sit down one-on-one with campus foodie Danielle Karp, a junior who writes for U of M’s Spoon University, to get the low-down on the best eateries in Ann Arbor, her love for writing (especially food, of course) and her own personal foodie blog from her travels.
HC: Can you tell us a little bit about Spoon University and how you’re involved in it?
Danielle Karp: Spoon University is an online food magazine that has expanded to many universities all over the country. The magazine covers all things food and cooking, and features articles from kitchen tips and recipes to on campus food news and events. I personally write for the restaurants section, where I get to eat and review restaurants all over Ann Arbor.
HC: Wow, so you must get to try out foods at some pretty delicious places. Do you have any to-die-for restaurants that our readers should try out?
DK: Yes! I’ve gotten to try some great places. Some of my favorites were definitely Blue Tractor for amazing barbeque, and my Mac and Cheese wars roundup, where I tasted mac & cheese from several different restaurants and reviewed them. The best mac and cheeses were definitely from Zingerman’s Roadhouse and Sava’s!
HC: Awesome, thank you! Have you always been interested in blogging? And more specifically, blogging about food?
DK: Yes I absolutely love writing and blogging. I started my own NYC food blog two summers ago, thenycfoodie.blogspot.com, and have been reviewing restaurants in New York over the summers since then. I love being able to document all of the amazing places I have tried and share them with other people. When I heard of the opportunity to blog for Spoon on campus, I immediately went for it so I could keep my food blogging going during the school year.
HC: I’m definitely going to have to check that out! What are your plans for being a foodie and blogger in the future?
DK: Next semester I am studying abroad in Florence. Being that Italy is bound to have unbelievable food, I unquestionably plan on blogging about all of my amazing food experiences while I’m there. For upcoming summers, I hope to intern somewhere doing food writing so I can get hands-on experience. Food Network would be the ultimate dream!
