Let’s flash back to last week. You were probably feeling nothing but hatred for the world that is finals week. Countless papers, books and notes littered your desk, your room was probably a mess, laundry was untouched and food wrappers were everywhere. Or… was that just me? Finals are a necessary evil to get through during the college years but have no fear! This post is here to remind all of us what makes it awesome to be a Marymount Saint.
1. The access to Washington, D.C. is just perfect
Even though in a “previous post” (“Everything a Marymount Student has Said at Least Once”) the shuttle service was said to not always be on time, yet when it does get there that sigh of relief washes away all fury you may have had by standing in the cold (mainly because you are promised warmth). The shuttle will take you to the Ballston/MU Metro Station where you will have access to go wherever your heart desires, including a top favorite- our Nation’s Capital. Now I know all this sounds slightly overwhelming but it is something that Marymount students take in stride. Studying under the Monument or on the steps of the Capitol, watching the sun set behind the Potomac River, visiting all the museums, shopping in Georgetown, the list goes on… and on. And it. Is. Awesome.
2. The Professors care and class sizes are just right
It is widely known that this is a top reason why a lot of students come to Marymount. Since MU is a smaller university than most, the class sizes do not consist of hundreds of people and the professor actually finds the time and effort to learn about you as a person and not as a name on the roster. This is really beneficial when you need a reference for future jobs or endeavors- and the professors at MU are more than happy to give that to you.
(We can only hope…)
3.The Opportunities and Diversity makes Marymount
Literally you can go anywhere on campus and find a club, organization, sport, or volunteer opportunity for, well, anything. Whatever your interests, religion, race, gender, lifestyle- Marymount has something for you. And if not, MU gives you the opportunity to make it happen. We have such a diverse campus with people from all over the world enrolling each semester. This diversity has helped us grow as a community, on and off campus with various programs, including the new spotlight on the Common Ground program… And the fact that free food is almost a given in each of these organizations is always a plus.
4. If you need something, Marymount is there to help
This is another benefit of Marymount being a small school- the fact that if you need something fixed or special arrangements, it is pretty much a given that the staff or faculty could have it arranged for you. Want to minor or major in something that Marymount doesn’t offer? No problem. With hard work and dedicated staff and professors, there is a great chance you can graduate with a major in Business and a minor in the Works of Ryan Gosling (okay maybe that’s a bit of a stretch, but a girl can dream). There are options for vegans and vegetarians in the dining hall (although not quite sure how it tastes, it’s still there and ready for the taking!). There is also the Student Health Center that treat you like their own child when you’re sick, giving you everything you need to feel better (yes, this includes chicken noodle soup). Bottom line: if your needs aren’t met at Marymount, the dedicated staff and faculty are willing to take that extra step to make you more comfortable and make college life a little more bearable.
5. The Events on Campus
There are so many events on campus that most of us can’t even keep up with them. There are annual ones: Midnight Madness is most certainly a favorite, cheering on the basketball teams, homecoming, Portfolio in Motion, etc. Oh and can we talk about the time when We the Kings played at the Lee Center? Now that was something to celebrate. And then there are the smaller events that aren’t any less important: the bi-annual breakfast during finals week that comes with karaoke, pancakes and free prizes usually makes everyone slightly less stressed; singers, comedians and inspirational speakers are regulars here at Marymount, encouraging us to fulfill our dreams and provide a little entertainment along the way; and events that are held by the Student Government Association, peer mentors, Office of Campus Residential Services, etc. are always packed with the Marymount spirit…and free food.
Bonus: Look how awesome the main building looks this season. Just soak in its beauty, and remember that Finals are over. Feel better? Me too!
