Golden Globes 2014: Best Dressed

With the Golden Globes last night, award season is officially underway and Hollywood finds itself in the middle of a fashion frenzy as “Who Wore What” and “Best Dressed/Worst Dressed” lists are plastered all over every tabloid in the country.

As a fashion purist, I really dislike the concept of “worst dressed.” In its simplest form, fashion is a form of self-expression and who are we to knock someone’s personal statement of how they feel and how they want to look? However, just as there are winners are losers at every award show, there are also winners and losers of the red carpet.

I have a handful of favorites from last night but two of the most awe-worthy and impeccable looks were Robbie Margot of The Wolf of Wall Street and Lupita Nyong’o from 12 Years a Slave.

Robbie chose a white Gucci gown with emerald green pumps, neutral makeup and a clean and sophisticated up-do. When Robbie walked on the red carpet, I was immediately reminded of Jennifer Lawrence’s red Ralph Lauren dress from the 2011 Oscars. While the looks are entirely different, it was the concept of a practically-unknown actress completely blowing everyone else out of the water. The simplicity of the look with its innate glamour made Robbie one of the best dressed of the night.

In a red Ralph Lauren Collection caped gown, Nyong’o cemented her status as one of today’s fashion icons. Already named one of Vogue’s Ten Rising Style Stars of 2014, the 12 Years a Slave star lived up to her title with the sleek, column silhouette and stunning cape detail.

While some might not always “get it right,” I always love the see celebrities take risks and really let their personality shine through, rather than playing it safe. It can be pretty clear which stars love dressing for the carpet and take an interest in fashion and which ones just let their stylists dress them (ahem, Jennifer Lawrence).

My favorite “riskier choice” from last night’s carpet was Emma Watson’s Christian Dior Haute Couture dress and pant combo. To be completely honest, Watson is an embodiment of style, class, and — oh, let’s just say it — perfection in my eyes so she can rarely do any wrong.

I love that she took a risk and it completely paid off! Her choice added interest to the carpet and managed to be sexy and sultry while only showing a little bit of skin. While not a classic red carpet look, it definitely has me intrigued for her next appearance.

Those who played it a little safer but still looked great were Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery and New Girl’s Zooey Deschanel.

Dockery wore a nude Oscar de la Renta gown with a peacock-skirted hemline. I only wish she has glammed-it-up some jewels around her neck.

Another Oscar girl, Deschanel wore what looks like a beige two-piece ensemble with an uneven hemline, also. I would like the gown better if it was hemmed evenly at the higher line above the ankle but she still looks like her quirky and adorable self.

There are some events in which looks are truly inspired from similar trends and there are commonalities between gowns and ensembles. But at last night’s Golden Globes, the only trend among the A-listers was that there was no trend. Everyone’s looks represented their own personal taste and style, rather than mimicking runway trends or embodying a theme in pop culture.

With such great looks at the Globes, I cannot wait to see what Oscar night brings!
