Boston: Kobe Bryant Comes to BC!
Our Facebook feeds were inundated with Kobe this past week when he made not one, but two surprise visits to The Heights. The Los Angeles Lakers were in town to play The Celtics and I guess Mr. Bryant was feeling academic. Bryant attended Marketing Professor Nick Nugent’s “International Marketing” class, much to Professor Nugent’s surprise. After the class ended, Bryant signed autographs and took photos with all the students in the class. He told them, “I did not go to college, but I love to learn and international marketing is something I am interested in.”
Global: Egypt’s New Constitution
Egypt has ardently been working to better structure their government over the past few months. Part of their reform involves drafting a new constitution, which was voted on this past week. An election official told The Associated Press that unofficial results after most of the ballots had been counted indicated that more than 90% voted “yes” on the constitution. Egyptian legislators are hoping that the constitution continues to face approval, so that it can be officially implemented sooner rather than later.
Entertainment: Meryl Streep Targets Walt Disney
During Meryl Streep’s appearance at the National Board of Review awards ceremony on January 7th, she made some comments that have been garnering great attention across the Internet. Why? Well, when you insult Walt Disney, there is sure to be a backlash. Streep attacked Mickey Mouse’s creator by saying he was a man who “had some racist proclivities” and “supported an anti-Semitic industry lobbying group and [was] a gender bigot.” Ironically, Streep is starring in the Disney studio’s adaptation of the musical Into the Woods, which will be released Christmas 2014.
Sports: The MLB Embraces Instant Replay
It was announced this week that the MLB would implement instant replay for its upcoming season. This means that MLB teams will be allowed to show contested plays on stadium screens. In addition, managers will be allowed two instant replay challenges per game, but only if their first challenge is successful. The hope is that teams will blame the umpires less and hopefully be more respectful during tough calls.
Health: Surgeon General Releases New Report on Smoking
The Surgeon General released a new and updated report this past Friday about the effects of smoking cigarettes. The report states that smoking can cause diabetes, colorectal and liver cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, erectile dysfunction, impaired fertility and immune system weakness. The report also warns that second-hand smoking could cause strokes for nonsmokers. A shocking statistic was included that will make you think twice before picking up your next cigarette: “Cigarette smoking kills nearly half a million Americans per year. If the current rates continue, approximately 5.6 million children – one out of every 13 alive today – will die prematurely of smoking-related causes.”
