Larran Pickett is a Marketing major and can be spotted on campus looking adorable in a dress, professional in a uniform, or relaxed & stylish with a T-shirt and jeans. She is an amazing conversationalist and brings out the best in everyone she chooses to hang out with. Larran also has a lesser known, but VERY amazing talent in art and spends some of her time making some awesome drawings and paintings. Larran is super fun, hilarious, chill, and–oh, did I mention she’s also one of my very best friends? Yeah. Be jealous.

Name: Larran Pickett

Year: 5th Year Senior Marketing major with a completed minor in Graphic Design

Age: 22

Relationship Status: Single

Hometown: Born in Germany (Military); grew up in San Antonio and Houston, Texas

What made you want to come to USM? We moved back to my mother’s hometown in mid-Mississippi after I graduated college. My favorite aunt and uncle both attended USM in the 80s and are now extremely successful. Hattiesburg was the absolute best choice of Mississippi universities, for me, in terms of the abundant culture and activities that it offered.

What is your average day like? This semester has been a huge change for me.  While my days still consist nearly entirely of music, I have recently added cooking, 18hrs of class, and working for the Southerner Yearbook as well as an Eagle Dining/Aramark marketing intern to my list.

What do you like to do for fun? I am an avid bike rider and now that I learned, I am also an avid cooker. I paint and draw, occasionally (much less, now, than when I was a Graphic Design major. Who knew?). I collect (rescue) old, threadbare books, movies, trinkets, and clothing and love to sit down and watch a movie from any era. I also adore hanging out with my exceptional friends!

Give me some of your favorite bands! Why do you love them!
I wish this list could be longer, but I’ll narrow it down to:
1. Pink Floyd—favorite band. I admire that they have changed their style so many times over the decades and still manage to be Pink Floyd, no matter what. You can find an album for any mood in their vast discography. If I had to choose one band to listen to for the rest of my life, they’d be it.
2. Animal Collective—pretty much the same as above. They are a close second to “Band I’d listen to for the rest of my life”. This band just produces such a variety. They have some of the most profound and relevant lyrics that I have ever read. You can barely understand what they are saying half the time, but if you take the time to look up the lyrics, they’ll change your life.
3. Queens of the Stone Age and similar projects—Homme can make a person feel that certain way with the voice he has.
4. System of a Down—I find that I can never be sad when I listen to them, even through the few slow songs!
5. A Perfect Circle or any of Maynard’s projects—Those melodies, man.

Where do you see yourself in ten years? Every year, this answer, as a whole, seems to change for me. I used to want to work for NASA while I lived in San Antonio. Now, I do know that I will HAVE to be involved in the food industry with whatever I end up doing. My dream job would be to work for the Scripps Network (brands include Food Network, Travel Channel, HGTV, etc.). I believe I am on my way to that goal with my Aramark internship opportunity! When I get somewhat settled, I would like to have a family. No specific timeline, just as long as I am no longer in any sort of school.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I thrift. A whole lot. Totally worth it, though, because I take my time and find the BEST deals.
