While You Were Out: This Week’s Top News

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Want to know some of the big events that happened in the news this past week? Snuggle up with a cup of hot chocolate and Her Campus BC will provide you with some of this week’s biggest headlines!

BC: Let it snow (?)

In case you somehow managed to stay inside all week, it has been really COLD outside. Snow storms were predicted early Wednesday morning, and BC delayed opening until 11am. In the end, there wasn’t that much snow, but we’ll take the late start! Thanks BC!

National: Bob goes free

Former governor Bob McDonnell, of Virginia, and his wife were released “on their own recognizance in their federal corruption case” Friday. McDonnell was indicted on 14 counts after being accused of accepting over $165,000 in loans and gifts from Star Scientific, Inc. The McDonnells were told to surrender their passports and have been forbidden to leave the country.

Global: Girl power! Central African Republic has first female president

For the first time in its history, a woman has been named the interim president of the Central African Republic. Catherine Samba-Panza, 58, will probably be in office for a little over a year, until national election time. Samba-Panza beat out seven other candidates, including the sons of two former presidents.

Health: Miami Heat and Michelle Obama join forces to promote healthy eating

To support her “Let’s Move” Campaign, which is aimed at ending child obesity in the United States, Michelle Obama recently teamed up (pun intended) with members of the Miami Heat NBA to film a short video at the White House. In it, Obama shows her B-ball skills and the basketball players reveal their silly sides.

Entertainment: Justin Bieber arrested

J Biebs, why do you have to keep breaking our heart? The pop star was arrested early Thursday morning in Miami and was slammed with DUI and Drag Racing charges. This is only one of the many issues Justin has been facing this week, as police searched for illegal substances in his house and one of his friends was arrested at Bieber’s home for drug possession. Kid’s gotta get his act together.
