While the Grammy Awards are an awards show that caters to the best in music, it is an awards ceremony that brings out the best in fashion, prominence, and performance. The 2014 Grammy Awards did not disappoint in this respect. Below, we focus on some of the best moments and themes of the night!

Dark Horse

It seemed as many of the nominees of the night catered to the more darker aspects of popular culture. Taking a cue from the general vibe of Wednesday Addams, the nominees were decked out in their darkest clothing choices. From Lorde, who was a presence on her social media profiles attempting to find inspiration leading up to the big night, to Katy Perry, the night took on a darker tone. However, the vibe was not one that was a dark atmosphere. The aesthetics were far from light and fuzzy, but the dark nature was more of a homage to being subtle than to any associated “angst”.

Music’s Biggest Night – and Biggest Stars

From the living members of The Beatles to Stevie Wonder to Madonna, multiple prominent figures were featured on the ceremony. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr performed one of McCartney’s new songs, and Ringo treated us to his seventies classic “Photograph”, Stevie Wonder took a more modern turn performing with Daft Punk, Pharrell, and Nile Rodgers, and Madonna closed the show with Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Queen Latifah, and Mary Lambert.

It was nice seeing these individuals stick to their classics, like Starr, as well as seeing them paired up with newer acts that took influence from them, like Wonder.

One of my favorite performances of the night was Carole King’s and Sara Bareilles performing “Brave”. It was a beautiful duet.

Performances

Can. We. Talk. About. Beyoncé? Her show opening was beautiful. Silence filled the room when we watched it (and unfortunately for some of the edited parts). She set off the strong on a strong note. I thought she couldn’t grab my attention anymore, and then Jay-Z walked on. It was one of the best show grabbers.

Taylor Swift also made me happier with every honest lyric and hair flip. Sometimes, I feel like her personal life takes precedence over the fact that she puts on a really good show. Taylor has undeniable talent, and “All Too Well” was something that was nice to hear for Swifties and more casual fans.

I'm a college freshman with a love for anything pop culture. I like to dance, sleep, and be surrounded by positivity.
