Staying Informed: A Collegiette’s Guide to Current Events

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

It’s easy to get caught up in crazy celebrity news stories such as Justin Bieber’s arrest, Miley Cyrus’s dyed eyebrows and who’s divorcing who on the Kardashians. Everyone needs a break from hard news to follow their fave celebs, but it is important to stay informed on social and political issues our nation, and the world, is facing.

Whether on an interview for a job or in a classroom, current events are almost always a point of discussion.

Here are some key news organizations to follow that will help to keep you up to date on current events:

New York Times: This publication aims to reach a sophisticated and well-educated audience, like you! It tells the story of what is occurring in our country, as well as international affairs. The content produced is reliable, accurate and is an essential source to follow, whether you read the print, online or mobile version.

CNN, MSNBC, and FOX: These news programs are great to follow for political news. You have to be sure, however, to realize that some of the shows aired on these channels have a certain bias. Despite your political and social views, you should try to listen to different perspectives, even if you disagree with what the program is broadcasting.

Google Alerts: Receive daily updates from Google, on just about any topic you’re interested in. As long as you have a Google account you can easily set up alerts to be sent to your email. You can also filter what type of content you are looking for; news, blog, videos discussions and books. Another feature is how often you would like to receive these alerts, daily, weekly, or as they happen.

Your Local Paper: No matter where you live, you should always follow the local news in your area. It’s important to keep up with current events in your town because this is news that can directly affect your everyday life. Be sure to read over articles that seem of interest to you.
