The Valentine’s Day Soundtrack for Singles

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

For whatever reason, single people hate Valentine’s Day. Apparently, it’s the only day of the year that everyone realizes that they’re single and that being romantically involved with someone suddenly becomes more important than mental health (and often physical- no, I’m not buying this Russel Stover heart-shaped box of chocolates for anyone other than myself, thank you.) To those who are single and upset about it, don’t worry! Because this playlist was created with you, enveloped by your comfortors in bed with Netflix and a pint of cherry garcia, in mind.

1. Single Ladies – Beyoncé

Let’s get the obvious one out of the way- that is not, of course, to diminish its importance on our playlist here. Single Ladies is the anthem for allllll the single ladies so putcha hands UP

2. No Scrubs – TLC

This song makes it to this playlist in shameless black pleather, forever reminding us that it’s far better to be single than to be with a scrub (also known as a bustaaaa) so ladies, don’t settle for a scrub.

3. Girls Just Wanna Fun – Cyndi Lauper

And who can have fun with a boyfriend hanging on their arm all the time?

4. F**k You – Lily Allen

From her album “It’s Not Me, It’s You” Lily Allen reminds us that people suck (broad generalization) (maybe), so stay single.

5. Not Gon’ Cry – Mary J. Blige

Aaaand neither are you, becaue being single is a beautiful, beautiful thing.

6. Roses – OutKast

You didn’t get roses for Valentine’s Day- so what? They really smell like oooooh-ooh-ooh.

7. Back to Black – Amy Winehouse

When your ex gets on with his new chick, go back to black. It’s more flattering than a guy, anway.

8. Tyrone – Erykah Badu

Say ~ goodbye ~ to less than perfect behavior from your significant other.

9. You Oughta Know – Alanis Morrisette

You didn’t really think you could get through this playlist without seeing this one, did you?

10. Burn – Usher

For those who have more recently gone through a break up, WELCOME TO SINGLEHOOD. And listen to this song. Just let it burn, honey.

11. Doo-Wop (That Thing) – Lauryn Hill

Some guys are only about “that thing” … and so are some girls.

12. Milkshake – Kelis

Being single certainly means you bring all the boys to the yard. If you got it, flaunt it!

13. Take A Bow – Rihanna

Nothing tells your ex to “just shut the hell up already” the way this song does.

14. Glory – Iggy Azalea

This song is a testament to independence. Neva mind ’em, neva neva mind ’em.

15. Ignition (Remix) – R.Kelly

Because no playlist is complete without it.
