Campus Celebrity: Meet Michelle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCAD chapter.

Since the day I met Michelle, I could immediately tell that she was a driven and goal oriented woman. Needless to say we became great friends. Throughout her college career, Michelle has not only experienced SCAD from an international perspective but has adjusted with such diligence and poise that it’s almost hard to believe she wasn’t born and raised here all her life! She is currently a docent at the SCAD museum of art and has been an active spokeswoman for the art history society on campus. Students know her for living in the library, but I know her for being an amazing artist and an intelligent, well versed, future curator. Meet Michelle…

Her Campus:Where are you from?

Michelle Guash Caraballo: I was born in Ponce Puerto Rico and I’m currently a senior in the Savannah College of Art and Design studying Art History. At a very early age I discovered that I was passionate about history and its everlasting effects on society. As I was studying historic events I discovered that art narrates these stories and show us people’s reactions to these events. I’m currently the vice president of the Art History Society, a member of the Queers and Allies club, I work at the SCAD museum as a docent, I have volunteered several times at the Humane Society and I have also volunteered at the Savannah Film Festival. One of the many things I liked about SCAD was that they provide a lot of individualized help and dedication to their students due to the small amount of people in each class.

HC: How has the experience been from an international point of view?

MGC: Having been born and raised in Puerto Rico I learned that culture is one of the most important things one can value. Being at SCAD has allowed me to meet many talented artists who are also passionate about their culture. Meeting these people has also allowed me to discover new ways in which I can not only write about art but also create art. I have discovered that an artist is an artist in all the sense of the word, she is not limited to only one kind of medium or format but rather she can express herself in every way possible.

HC: How do you manage your social and academic life here?

MGC: Although both my academic and social life overlap at times I try to keep them separate. My academic life is my privilege and my social life comes second. Time management is the key to success when it comes to maintaining good grades and a good social life.

HC: What influences your personal style?

MGC: When it comes to my style comfort is the best choice. In my closet you will always find a good pair of black jeans and a white t-shirt.

HC: What is your dream job?

MGC: My dream job is to be a proud owner of my own non-traditional gallery.

HC: What advice would you give anyone interested in coming to SCAD?

MGC: My advice to people who are interested in SCAD would be: Enjoy the SCAD experience as much as possible. There are many opportunities here and people who are willing to help so take advantage of it. More importantly, surround yourself with passionate artists who will impact your art works in positive ways.
