Well collegiettes, it seems that this spring semester is no different than any other here at Wake Forest. Time is passing exceptionally quickly and, before we know it, we’re preparing for our inevitable exams and writing assignments. Even with all my time spent here, I’ve only learned to (somewhat) manage my time and haven’t even learned proper domestic skills – ironing a traditional button-down is too difficult for me. There have been new challenges as well. I’m conflicted between my desire to hang with my initial friend group and the excitement that comes with meeting and going out with my new sorority sisters. As if these frustrations and deliberations aren’t enough, this particular month my life is complicated by yet another factor: love. I’ve never been a fan of Valentines Day, better known as Single’s Awareness Day. And this year in particular I’m overwhelmed by this semester’s latest boy crush.
My annoyance with this holiday is endless! For those lucky enough to be in relationships, it prompts the highest of expectations to be reached. For those who are single, eating an entire carton of ice cream and dreaming of that fairy tale moment seems to be the norm. This holiday, perpetuated and marketed by Hallmark, causes even greater complications for those who are just lost in the middle. Cupid’s day of love demands every “thing,” as we college kids like to define it, to be analyzed. Instead of carrying on with that casual but constant flirtation consisting of texting and showing up to his frat parties, the holiday practically forces you to “DTR.” Despite the complications caused by this day, I am weirdly excited and full of anticipation. How will the day go for the single ladies, couples, or those relationships that seem to be lost in the middle?
My advice to every freshman on this stressful Friday: relax and enjoy this day just as any other. It’s just one more Friday here at the Forest (not to mention, it’s a freaking snow day so enjoy this class-less V-Day!) We should all appreciate each moment that is spent here on campus. Instead of getting wrapped up in the drama, complications and expectations one day brings, focus on how quickly freshman year has passed by. Don’t wallow in your room eating ice cream and watching Hugh Grant! Today is another beautiful day in your life – live it to the fullest.
Enjoy every moment, even on the most frustrating holiday ever invented.
Always,
Brooklyn xoxo
