Juicing seems to be one of the fastest-growing food trends in the last couple of years. It is important to know the facts about juicing before diving in. There are several companies that produce ready-made cleanses and individual juices, but they can seriously add up, especially on a student budget! I own a juicer at home that I am in love with. There is something uniquely satisfying about watching solid veggies turn into juice in a matter of seconds. It allows me to know exactly what I am putting in my body instead of relying on sugar-packed varieties at the grocery store.
The most important thing to understand about juicing is that while you are getting some of the nutritional elements of the fruits or veggies you juice, you also lose important things like fiber. Your body needs fiber in order to function properly. Some nutritionists say that juice cleansing is fine as long as you get permission from your doctor. Also, it should be noted that any weight you may lose while juicing is mostly water weight that will be regained once you return to solid foods. If juice cleansing isn’t your thing, then consider using juice as a nutritional supplement to your daily diet.
Here is my current favorite recipe if you want to give it a try! Just stick all ingredients in a juicer and you’re good to go.
- 5-6 peeled carrots
- 1/4 inch peeled ginger root
- 1 beet
- 1 apple
