Happy Black History Month!

In honor of February being Black History Month I wanted to share just a few vintage photos of historical black women who have made a difference in today’s world.

“I have to change a tune to my own way of doing it, that’s all I know.” -Billie Holiday, Jazz Vocalists

“Anytime women come together with a collective intention, it’s a powerful thing. Whether it’s sitting down making a quilt, in a kitchen preparing a meal, in a club reading the same book, or around the table playing cards, or planning a birthday party, when women come together with a collective intention, magic happens.” -Phylicia Rashad

Dorothy Dandridge was the first black woman to be nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Actress.

After a nomination in the Best Actress category for her role in the film “Sounder.” Cicely Tyson answers a few questions for reporters on the red carpet as she arrived to the Academy Awards in Los Angeles California on March 27, 1973.

The original Playboy costume was created by a black women, a fashion designer by the name of Zelda Wynn Valdes. Valdes was known for her sexy hip-hugging styles and her clientele included many of the notable black women of that era including Dorothy Dandridge, Josephine Baker, Marian Anderson, Ella Fitzgerald and Gladys Knight. Little known to many, her work even caught the eye of Hugh Hefner, who commissioned her  to design the original and most popularly known costumes for the Playboy Bunnies.

Happy Black History Month!
