Most of us are either unable to watch the morning news, or aren’t interested in watching it to begin with. Whether we’re still sleeping (which is more likely than not) or in class, sometimes we forget to catch up on what’s happening in the world, as at times can be too caught up in what’s going on in our own college world.

A few mornings ago I turned on the TV, and NBC news was on. They were recapping the Olympics and I figured, “this is interesting enough,” so continued watching. The recap ended, and the reporter introduced a new topic, a non-profit organization; Love Your Melon. I found myself completely moved by what was being reported, opposed to watching just because.

Founded by University of St. Thomas Students students Zachary Quinn and Brian Keller, Love Your Melon is an organization that provides children cancer patients with comfortable hats that cover their “melon,” as they undergo treatment for their various conditions. The hats are meant to restore confidence in the children and provide warmth as they continue to battle cancer.  Their motto is, “Buy One- Give One.”  Purchasing a hat couldn’t be easier, and the concept couldn’t be better.

Love Your Melon, which started off as a school project, has evolved into a full-blown foundation. This fair in their efforts (which began in October 2012), Love Your Melon has donated more than 5,000 hats to children in hospitals all over the country.

Love Your Melon has been on a nationwide “Smile Tour,” since early January, personally delivering hats and spreading the word about their mission.

Help put a smile on these children’s faces and purchase a hat! For further information, you can follow them on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest
