Nicole Strauss has been a member of Kappa Alpha Theta since her freshman year at UF.

The 21-year-old accounting junior said she didn’t think she would ever join a sorority when she first came to the university because she didn’t know much about Greek life.  But once she started talking to the members of the sorority, Strauss said she knew it was what she wanted to do.

“I couldn’t imagine not being in Theta,” she said.

Strauss and her sisters will be hosting an event this year called “Capture the Kite,” a specialized version of capture the flag. It will be the group’s first time having an event like this. The event will raise money for the National Court Appointed Special Advocates Foundation (CASA).

Strauss is the recruiting chair for Theta, which means she is responsible for the weeklong process of recruiting members at the beginning of the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters. She said the job is a big responsibility that comes with a huge time commitment, but she’s not too worried about it.

“Every job I’ve ever had, I’ve given my all into it,” she said.

Strauss said she chose to be an accounting major because math was the only subject she ever liked and finds out if she was accepted in the accounting college’s 3/2 program this summer. After graduating with her master’s degree and her CPA, Strauss said she wants to be an accountant.

She said she always knew she wanted to go to UF.  Her parents and other family members went to UF.

“I grew up being a Gator,” Strauss said. “It was the only school I applied to.”

During her time at UF, Strauss said she’s grown into an individual and her own person.

“It’s hard at first,” she said. “But college is your chance for you to grow into who you’re supposed to be.”
